Department Description

The position plays a financial guidance role interacting with other divisions of A&FS, ANR, campuswide departments and the medical center as well as with other UC campuses and the Office of the President.

Position assists with the day-to-day management of campus-wide financial accounting and reporting, including the Medical Center and Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Monitors efficiency of the unit, and reviews and implements policy and business process improvements.

The operations of Financial Accounting & Reporting division support the entire UCD community including UCD Health Systems in Sacramento, research centers at Bodega Bay and Tulare, the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (“ANR”) field stations located throughout California and the Washington D.C. Center.



Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Accounting, the incumbent serves as a critical member of General Accounting. The incumbent must understand all of the attributes connected to the Chart of Accounts to ensure proper financial reporting at the local and consolidated UC level; assist in the preparation of components of the UC Davis financial statements, management discussion and analysis and notes including support for the disclosures; provide analytical and functional support for financial statement review , pull data as requested and reconcile to the ledger and financial statements, and special projects as assigned. Incumbent plays a campuswide financial guidance role by offering technical, advisory and interpretive support of accounting policies and procedures; and provides testing support of financial system changes/implementations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience) ; 7-10 years of experience in accounting;
  • Experience using a General Ledger system, preferably Oracle or similar ERP system 
  • Experience in leading assigned projects, seeing project through from beginning to end with little or no direction to a successful conclusion ;

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Advanced knowledge in accounting and financial management principles, theory and practice including knowledge ofgenerally accepted accounting principles in Governmental Accounting Standards (GASB) environment 
  • Excellent Excel skills, including formatting, Vlookups, Sumifs, and Pivot Tables; 
  • Demonstrated professional level of analytical, statistical and mathematical skills to conduct complex financial analyses and summarizing large volumes of data from multiple systems for accurate reporting 
  • Proven teamwork skills with the ability to successfully be a member of a multi-functional team and to contribute to moderately complex projects


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

  • Experience with college and university accounting, fund accounting principles, audit techniques, and internal control standards in a University of California environment.
  • Experience using Oracle Financial products for Higher Education.
  • Organizational experience in planning, setting priorities, multi- tasking, and adapting to changing priorities while meeting required deadlines.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Oral and written communication skills to relay complex and sometimes negative information to constituents in a way that facilitates error correction.
