Job Summary:

Garden Manager is a 10-hour/week job that is integral to our USF Community Garden and the courses taught therein. The Garden Manager collaborates with the Director of the Urban Agriculture Program and the Chair of the Environmental Studies Program.

Full Job Description:

Duties include:

  • Prepares and maintains USF’s Community Garden. This includes maintaining drip irrigation, soil amending, and crop/orchard management (both short-term and long-term)

  • Facilitates USF Community Work Days; maintains outdoor gathering space, bee hive, greenhouse, potting area, storage sheds and tools, worm bin, rain catchment system, and compost operations.

  • Organizes, prepares, and leads workshops and tours in the USF Community Garden, which includes hands-on planting/harvesting activities and a respite from the classroom/computer life

  • Communicates with the Biology Department, Facilities, and other community members regarding shared garden use.

  • Works with garden research assistants who help to steward the garden

  • Builds and sustains community partnerships with agricultural and food organizations for community-engaged learning courses and collaborations with a particular focus on connections with BIPOC-led farms and food justice organizations in the area as learning sites for community collaboration and organizing, and pathways to diversifying participation in the Urban Agriculture program.

  • Other duties as assigned by a supervisor.

Compensation: $32-35/hour

Please note, for candidates with a terminal degree and teaching experience, there is the possibility of teaching Community Garden Outreach, a 4-unit hands-on service-learning course that engages students from all majors in the creation of community through the cultivation, harvesting, preparation, and serving of food.  The class is taught one day a week, Mondays, from 11:45-3:25 p.m., in the USF Community Garden, with access to an industrial kitchen for food preparation.  The class also engages in the Bay Area urban agriculture community through visits to local gardens and volunteering at these sites.  If selected to teach the course, compensation will be $2185/unit/semester.

 

Preferred Qualification:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent (permaculture teaching certificate, for example) 

  • Several years of teaching experience in a garden, cooking/preserving food 

  • Several years managing a garden (preferably an educational garden)

  • Desire and excitement to work in a culturally diverse environment, including engaging with and uplifting BIPOC, women, and LGBTQ+ students.
