Job Description

Do you love and excel in your major? Do you enjoy helping other people understand and learn new things? Then you might just be a great peer tutor!

Undergraduate Peer-Tutors are employed to provide individualized assistance to Friends University students. Peer-Tutors are expected to encourage and support students to develop the academic skills necessary to be effective, efficient, and confident in their academic studies.  Some of the subject areas in which Peer-Tutors focus are: writing, math, science (chemistry, biology, zoo science, etc.), engineering, accounting, finance, music theory, computer science, religion, and Spanish.

Peer Tutors work one-on-one with students, lead study sessions, attend monthly training in-services for tutoring skill development, and help with the day-to-day operations of the Academic Resource Center. Tutoring experience is not required because we provide a strong orientation and ongoing training.

Skills & Requirements

Content competency (to be determined by faculty recommendation) and good interpersonal and communication skills (to be determined by ARC Director and staff) are required.

Applicants are required to submit a resume, cover letter, and writing sample, as well as receive a recommendation from a faculty member.

The writing sample should be an argumentative (preferred) or research (acceptable) paper with at least three references. Submitting a Comp II assignment is acceptable. If selected for the next step, the ARC will contact the applicant to schedule an interview with the Academic Resource Center director and operations coordinator.

Days/Hours: The ARC will be open 11 am – 9 pm, Monday - Thursday, 11 am – 4 pm Friday, and 3 pm – 9 pm Sunday. Work hours during these times are flexible, and from 6-20 hours per week.
