General Summary

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Eastern Michigan University seeks applications for one full-time Lecturer position in mathematics (non-tenure track).  The teaching load is 30 hours per academic year (approximately 15 hours per semester).  Some courses may be offered in the evening.  Primary teaching responsibilities will be in freshman and sophomore level mathematics courses including mathematical reasoning, college algebra, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, math for elementary teachers, and pre-college mathematics.  Instructors participate in a team environment that supports and implements strategies for curriculum development, continuous improvement and assessment of student learning, and inclusive excellence in teaching.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Applicants should be able to demonstrate:

  • good oral and written communication skills;
  • a strong commitment to the teaching of freshman and sophomore level mathematics content that supports a variety of degree programs;
  • effective teaching in a technology-supported mathematics learning environment; skills for effective and dedicated participation in collaborative academic environments;
  • knowledge of and skill with varied pedagogical methods including the use of educational software to develop curriculum, assessments, and online homework assignments;
  • the knowledge and ability to teach a variety of courses across the department's freshman-level and sophomore-level mathematics curriculum;
  • and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, racial/ethnic backgrounds as well as diverse abilities and disabilities, sex, gender/gender identity, and sexual orientation.

Each member of the instructional staff has the duty to deliver instruction, participate in learning outcomes assessment, and maintain a learning environment consistent with the highest standards of the profession.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed all degree requirements for the master's degree in mathematics.  Applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and have completed all degree requirements for a master's degree in statistics or mathematics education may be considered.  Applicants should have documented successful teaching experience in mathematics in the college setting.
