The Environmental Studies Program at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a full-time teaching track position at the rank of Lecturer to begin in August 2024. The Environmental Studies program integrates the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities to provide interdisciplinary environmental training to its students. This position will fill an important need by providing instruction in the application of GIS to the study of environmental systems and processes.
A full-time teaching load in the Environmental Studies program consists of three courses per semester in addition to a service component. Responsibilities of this position include developing teaching materials and teaching introductory and advanced undergraduate courses on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Additional responsibilities include advising undergraduate majors and minors as well as program-level service activities.
The initial term of the appointment will be for one year, with renewal contingent upon performance. Teaching track faculty will not be evaluated on or expected to engage in research or scholarship as part of their appointment.
Requirements include holding a Ph.D. in Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Studies, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Geospatial Sciences, Geoinformatics, or a related field by the time of the appointment; native or near-native proficiency in English; experience with teaching the application of GIS to investigate and address environmental problems and processes; and demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse student population.
Applications must include: (1) letter of application; (2) current CV; (3) a statement regarding the candidate’s approach to, and experience in, teaching GIS-related subjects in an environmental context; (4) a teaching demonstration, such as a 10 to 15 minute Zoom recording or YouTube link; (5) sample syllabi; (6) teaching evaluations; (7) three letters of reference. These materials should be uploaded to Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/143633 . Letters of references can be requested through the Interfolio interface when applying. Questions about the position may be addressed to Professor Jeffrey Catalano, program director and search committee chair, at [email protected] . Review of applications will begin on April 29, 2024.
