General Information
The Office of Residence Life at James Madison University is accepting applications for a Full-Time Hall Director. The Office of Residence Life is committed to designing and maintaining a caring environment that encourages academic success, respect, personal growth and responsibility to one’s community.
Full-Time Hall Directors report to an Area Director of Residence Life. These are 12-month, live-in position. A furnished apartment (partner and pet friendly), professional development funds and a partial meal plan are provided in addition to salary and classified benefits.
Full-Time Hall Directors are part of the Residence Life team that serves 6,700 residential students on a campus that is continuing to grow. We focus on making the students’ residential experience one filled with opportunities to engage and learn about themselves and others. We are a close-knit department with just over 30 full-time staff members and over 200 student staff members.
Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership, Management, and Supervision – Directly supervise 11 to 18 Resident Advisers (RAs). Manage hall staff performance, student development, student leadership, student conduct, and hall community engagement. Provide written performance evaluations twice per year for RAs. Participate in all recruitment, selection and training processes for RAs, including instructing a one-credit RA Class. Implement check-in and check-out procedures. Potentially collaborate with a live-in Faculty in Residence member.
Equity and Inclusion –
Contribute to the Student Affairs equity and inclusion value by confronting systems of oppression by designing intentional and inclusive practices and programs in pursuit of a socially just world.
Student Conduct – Interpret and enforce university and hall policies, manage administrative processes related to documenting and follow-up for student behavior. Meet with students and staff to discuss and manage behavioral concerns (mental health, policy/community violations, roommate conflicts, etc.).
Crisis Management
– Participate in on-call rotation for the residential campus. Provide support to staff during times of crisis.
Community Engagement – Using the Curriculum Model, conduct and support hall programming and community engagement efforts. Create monthly Community Learning Plan.
Committee Work –Serve on departmental and university committees as necessary.
Professional Development – Accumulate a minimum of 10 hours of professional development during each performance evaluation period. Obtain hours by attending university, divisional, and department training. Attend conferences, get a certification, or complete other job-related training. Use professional development opportunities to stay relevant to trends and best practices.

Required:
  • Residence hall employment experience
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
