Job Description:

 Berklee College of Music Piano Department invites qualified applicants to apply for a full-time position. The Berklee community consists of over 6,000 talented and diverse students, 850 internationally respected faculty, over 700 dedicated staff, and an extended family of alumni, whose numerous Grammy awards testify to their contributions to the music of our time and the future. 

 

The Piano Department services over one thousand Berklee students and is comprised of over 40 faculty who provide private lessons, lab instruction in various piano styles and basic keyboard classes.  The departmental curriculum for piano principals and performance majors focuses on stylistic interpretation, improvisational skills, and overall performance health as applied to contemporary musical styles.  Additionally, the Piano Department offers intensive training in reading and interpreting music in both traditional score notation and chord-symbol lead sheet notation. 

The candidate must be a skilled and compassionate teacher and a nationally recognized performer in Latin styles. They must possess and demonstrate a deep knowledge of the history, traditions, and performance practices of varied Latin influenced musical genres in both artistry and pedagogy. Although a familiarity with varied historical and contemporary musical styles such as classical, jazz, blues, pop, etc. is preferred, the ideal candidate for this position is someone with mastery in playing and teaching Latin-influenced styles including but not limited to Mambo, Chachacha, Cumbia, Bachata, Rumba, Bolero, Bossa Nova, Salsa, Tango, Son Montuno, Merengue, and others.  Ranking and compensation is commensurate with professional experience, competencies, and qualifications. The start date for the position is Fall 2024 Semester.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Mastery in teaching Latin influenced piano styles and techniques

  • Master of Music degree or equivalent professional experience

  • A record of effective teaching experience in private and small group piano instruction 

  • A record of active regional, national/international performing experience

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills 

  • Strong interpersonal skills


  • A strong command of technology to be used in supporting teaching and learning

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach private instruction to students of varying skill levels and learning needs.

  • Teach and develop keyboard labs/classes that deeply explore Latin influenced musical genres 

  • Contribute to the growth of the department through service projects developed in partnership with the Department Chair 

  • Assist with curriculum development and review 

  • Serve on Department, Division and/or College committees as assigned 

  • Assist with advising and mentoring piano principals and performance majors. 

  • Contribute to piano department sponsored diversity initiatives and other special events as needed.

  • Assist with specified department goals as requested.
