Job Description:

Berklee College of Music invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the Electronic Production and Design Department. The Department is looking for a sound design professional who has experience working with a broad range of projects that run the gamut from synthesizers, sound design for visual media and music projects, sound for commercial products, sound for games and interactive environments, installation sound, and new musical instrument design. They will have a clear vision of how sound design supports immersive entertainment technologies and their work should reflect an innate curiosity about sound. The successful candidate will be able to integrate research in the field with contemporary commercial and artistic practice and will be committed to working with curious, highly motivated students and faculty colleagues.

The new faculty hire will embrace collaborative work and will have a proven track record of engaging with artists and designers from other disciplines. They will have excellent interpersonal communication skills demonstrated through a record of inclusive and collegial action in a variety of situations. Demonstrating a deep awareness of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging issues and a dedication to continue to develop that knowledge, the ideal candidate will work with colleagues and lead students towards the continuous goal of making Berklee a more inclusive institution. This is a full-time faculty position with a renewable contract, initial appointment to begin September 1, 2024. Compensation is commensurate with professional experience.

Primary teaching responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching core and elective courses in advanced music and media technology topics

  • Teaching courses focused on sound design for visual media, game audio with Unreal Engine and Unity, and new musical instrument design and development working closely with directed study students on their capstone projects

  • Designing and refining curriculum to reflect changes and developments in the industry

  • Creating an inclusive and supportive environment in the classroom

Experience and Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree or equivalent work experience. Their portfolio should include examples of professional sound design work on a variety of different types of projects such as sound for picture, video games, immersive audio installations and/or new musical instrument building applications. Experience coding and scripting is an important strength we would like to see.

In addition, the successful candidate will have strengths in several of the following areas:

  • Expertise in hardware and software synthesizers using core and advanced sound synthesis techniques

  • Expertise with digital signal processing, DSP techniques used in contemporary sound design

  • Advanced knowledge of current DAW software with a strong focus on Ableton Live as well a solid working knowledge of at least one other DAW such as Pro Tools, Logic, BigWig or Reaper

  • Experience working with common game engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine as well as audio middleware such as Wwise

  • Experience working with 360 video and audio production techniques

  • Experience with field recording and multichannel recording techniques, including ambisonic recording

  • Experience designing and mixing audio for Dolby Atmos or other 3D audio systems

  • Experience designing for VR systems such as Oculus Quest

  • Designing sound for installations

  • Designing and developing new hardware musical instruments and controllers, with knowledge in various electronic prototyping platforms and development tools, including but not limited to Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or Bela

  • Teaching experience is highly desirable as well as excellent collaboration skills
