Job Summary
 

The University of Chicago Law School is seeking a Full Stack Developer to join our IT team. The individual in this position will be responsible for developing, building, and maintaining web applications using a variety of software applications, techniques, and tools with a solid eye towards the best user experience. This position reports directly to our Director of Information Technology, and works alongside our user support, systems administration, and database development teams.

Responsibilities


  • Leads the effort to specify, improve, and implement the functionality of UI/UX best practices.

  • Utilizes backend frameworks to provide CRUD functionality to the front end via REST APIs.

  • Defines work process steps that need to be taken for individual projects. 

  • Collaborates directly with faculty, staff, and other members of the IT team to define and design project scope and interface features. 

  • Develops time estimates for projects and ensure timely updates and on-going maintenance of web applications and online services. 

  • Troubleshoots user, hardware, and software problems related to web applications. 

  • Documents development decisions and processes thoroughly. 

  • Performs code testing on components and works to ensure that appropriate implementation standards are met. Evaluate design alternatives for development cost and solutions using various methods. 

  • Investigates, analyzes and resolves day-to-day technical problems using standard procedures. 

  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications  


 


Education: 


  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. 


 


Experience: 


  • 2+ years of full stack development experience including front end user interfaces and back end systems. 

  • Experience in web-based application development, deployment, debugging and maintenance. 


 Technical Skills or Knowledge:


  • Solid and demonstrable technical understanding of front-end web technologies: JavaScript (ES6), CSS (with Sass/LESS), HTML, as well as related technologies, such as Git, Node/npm, Apache, REST APIs, JSON, etc. 

  • Experience with back-end frameworks such as PHP, Java, Python, or .Net. 

  • Experience with RDBMS such as MS SQL and MySQL. 

  • Experience with PC, Mac and UNIX operating systems/environments. 

  • Solid understanding of major browsers: Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and Safari in desktop and mobile contexts. 


 


Preferred Competencies  


  • A demonstrated and firm commitment to web-usability and accessibility standards compliant, cross-browser compatible, and clean and well-commented code. 

  • Ability to be flexible and responsive to changing duties as the web changes. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Ability to create detailed technical designs and implement them with little help. 

  • Ability to juggle many competing demands, as well as to demonstrate good decision-making and initiative. 

  • Ability to work independently and quickly.  


Working Conditions


  • This position is available for partially remote work based on the needs of the Law School.
