Description

NYU Shanghai invites applications for a full-time, continuing contract Clinical Assistant Professor in Visual Arts or Assistant Arts Professor in Visual Arts. Applicants should be able to teach courses in their area of expertise, but priority will be given to those who can teach one or more of the following: Animation, Photography, Video, and Ink Arts. Candidates should hold an MFA or equivalent terminal degree in Visual Arts. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin the appointment in August/September 2024.

The ideal candidate is a visual artist, with evidence of a dedicated studio practice in their field. The candidate should be conversant in visual literacy and contemporary art practices. Applicants who incorporate art historical knowledge into their practice will be prioritized. 

The faculty member will teach courses including but not limited to Foundations in Visual Arts and other studio-based Visual Arts courses at various levels according to the needs of the area. The faculty member will also help plan and manage the art studios, mentor students, attend meetings, serve on university committees and contribute to co-curricular programming. The language of instruction is English.

This is a Full-Time Continuing Contract Faculty (FTCC) position. Candidates must have a Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment in August of 2024 and have at least 2 years of relevant work experience. Typical appointments are on 3 year terms, with expected teaching loads of 4 courses per academic year. Candidates will have a teaching load of 2/2, with classes serving the Visual Arts curriculum and, if applicable, the Humanities at NYU Shanghai. Rank is commensurate with experience. While we seek candidates who are actively exhibiting, successful candidates will be hired on the basis of teaching and service.

Terms of employment at NYU Shanghai are comparable to NYU New York and other U.S. institutions.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • MFA or terminal degree in Visual Arts
  • At least two years of college-level teaching experience as the instructor of record in general Visual Arts Foundations courses
  • Demonstrated expertise and teaching of other studio-based Visual Arts Courses
  • English language fluency

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four or more years of college-level teaching experience as the instructor of record in general Visual Arts Foundations courses.
  • Experience teaching praxis art courses, art theory, aesthetics, art history, or Humanities-based arts courses.
  • Demonstrated expertise of teaching Photography, Video, Animation and/or Ink Arts at an undergraduate level.

Applicants will submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, 20 images of their work, an artist statement, statement of teaching interests, 10 images of work completed by the applicant’s undergraduate students within the last two years, and one sample syllabus. Additionally, applicants should submit a reference list with the names and email addresses of at least three referees. Each referee will be contacted to upload a reference letter through Interfolio for candidates advancing to the final stage.
