Georgetown’s Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) , founded in 1919, is a premier school of international affairs. SFS provides a rigorous education grounded in both theory and practice while instilling the Jesuit value of service.

Job Overview

The Front-End Developer is responsible for ongoing web development, maintenance, ADA compliance adherence, user experience design, and search engine and site speed performance optimizations for the primary web properties related to Georgetown’s Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) and its undergraduate and graduate programs and affiliated centers and institutes. 

They work with stakeholders across SFS business units and in close coordination with the SFS Communications team to ensure that primary business objectives tied to online properties are successfully met and essential platform integrations are maintained.

As well, they work closely with the Web Services team in University Information Services to ensure SFS’s website functionality and design needs are integrated with the university’s central Web Content Management System (CMS); and ensure that any front-end development in the central CMS follows all Web Services code standards and processes.

Additionally, the Front-end Developer monitors Google Analytics, Site Improve, and other server and site performance tools as necessary to ensure that university ADA compliance standards and core website performance standards are maintained. 

They have a critical position at SFS as the technologies underpinning our websites are constantly evolving and require high levels of sustained maintenance by skilled persons. The SFS-affiliated websites represent cornerstones of our brands and act as the hub for all of our paid and earned media efforts, prospective student engagement, current student and faculty communications, and alumni community engagement.

Work Interactions

Reporting to the SFS Executive Director of External Relations and Marketing, the Front-End Developer and works closely and collaboratively with the central SFS Communications team, the SFS Dean’s Office, and multiple stakeholders across all SFS business units.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional work experience, preferably  at least 3 of those years in website programming and digital marketing in a professional setting
  • Advanced knowledge of HTML and CSS programming languages and their practical applications
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of JavaScript programming language – preference for jQuery
  • Experience with web accessibility, including WCAG and Section 508
  • Understanding of responsive web design and mobile-first methodologies
  • Strong experience with at least one enterprise web content management system - preferably WordPress
  • Familiarity with at least one web programming language - preferably php
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 
  • Fluency in the use of design software for web development, such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Experience Designer
  • Strong organizational, project, and time management skills 
  • Ability to work both collaboratively in a team environment, and independently with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace 
  • Experience using Google Analytics and Site Improve as diagnostic tools for site performance
