The Neurodiversity Navigators (NdN) Program Assistant position (working title Front Desk-Peer Mentor Assistant) is the focal point for the program for responding to routine program inquiries from internal and external parties, as well as responding to routine inquiries from lower-level staff. This position serves as a substitute peer mentor when part-time peer mentors are absent. This position assists higher-level staff and reports to the NdN Director.

The Program Assistant position supports the work of lower-level part-time staff and provides direct student services as needed, on a drop-in basis and as a substitute peer mentor. Their primary responsibilities include day-to-day facilities coordination, serving as a Front Desk monitor to welcome students, staff, and visitors, answering their questions and guiding them to appointments and campus services. This position answers routine questions from the community, students, and part-time peer mentors. In this role, they also monitor and reply to routine queries from the NdN and DSNS shared mailboxes.

This position provides administrative organization including recordkeeping, preparing text and email templates, answering routine public inquiries, and preparing and sending information packets and materials.

Position Salary Range: $39,624/year - $52,596/year

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Individuals newly hired to Classified position are placed in a salary range based on the WPEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The employee is scheduled to work 32 hours per workweek. This is a Classified, overtime eligible position and represented by the Washington Public Employee Association of Higher Education (WPEA-HE).

The Neurodiversity Navigators program is an innovative program at Bellevue College that offers neurodivergent students educational programming along with individualized advocacy and access services. The program strives to ensure that the BC Neurodivergent population has equal access to student services and academics. Peer mentors play a major role by working with Neurodiversity Navigators students individually and in groups. 
At Neurodiversity Navigators, our mission is to support all neurodivergent students at Bellevue College through a social justice model. We provide educational opportunities to increase self-knowledge that leads to successful academic outcomes in the areas of executive functioning, self-regulation, social interaction, self-advocacy, and career preparation. Neurodiversity Navigators supports neurodivergent students with advocacy and access services and actively promotes a campus and community environment of inclusion and understanding of students, faculty, and staff with neurological differences.

General Administration

  • Staff the Front Desk as needed,
  • Perform opening and closing office duties, ensuring doors are locked, and more.
  • Track inventory, and report low amounts to Program Manager.
  • Assist students in reserving rooms, and monitor room use.
  • Direct students and staff to assigned meeting rooms.
  • Respond to routine questions from students and staff.
  • Refer students and staff to upper-level staff for complex concerns.
  • Answer email and phone inquiries from faculty, staff, students, and the community in a timely fashion, and refer as appropriate.
  • Provide information to the community about NdN and DSNS services,
  • Track registrations, send invitations, and take attendance at monthly information meetings,
  • Develop email and text message templates and send to students and others as directed,
  • Check office laptop computers in and out, maintain laptops and laptop cart and send to IT for updating as needed.

Substitute Peer Mentor

  • When a peer mentor is absent from work, substitute for them in the following manner:
  • Email and text message assigned students as needed.
  • Meet with assigned students to support student access to academics and campus life.
  • During meetings with students, utilize Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) to address barriers to success.
  • Maintain contact with students until regular peer mentor has returned.
  • Track student attendance and participation.
  • Provide clear and accurate instructions for navigating Bellevue College programs, such as how to set up academic advising appointments or check for holds on student accounts.
  • Write objective weekly reports to document student meetings.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and training sessions with other peer mentors, Program Manager, and Director.
  • Facilitate drop-in meetings for students.
  • In addition, maintain a caseload of 2-3 students as a peer mentor to stay informed of current peer mentor practices.

Other duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • High school graduation and two (2) years’ clerical experience. Any combination of relevant education and/or experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite tools, including SharePoint, Microsoft Word, OneNote, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to complete complex word processing tasks such as merging and sorting, uploading and downloading and creating footnotes and outlines.
  • Proficient at reading and writing; excellent composition, effective communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, and problem solve student and customer related issues.
  • At least two years of experience working with disabled students or other marginalized populations.
  • Associate’s degree in a related field AND two years of full-time customer or student service experience; OR equivalent education/experience.
  • Previous experience working with Autistic and / or Neurodivergent college students.
  • Previous experience working within a social justice model of disability.
  • Knowledge of college processes, procedures, and available student resources.
  • Previous experience working with Target X and ctcLink.
  • Training and experience with Collaborative Problem SolvingTM.
