The Network for College Success (NCS), at the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice, ensures college readiness and success for all students by translating research into practice and supporting leaders to organize their schools for improvement. NCS provides professional learning and support to school and district leaders and helps them focus on what matters most for high school students. NCS supports adults within and across schools to build their capacity to lead change, improve instruction, redress inequities, and support student transitions in and out of high school. NCS envisions high schools that continuously uphold the brilliance and humanity of students of color, cultivate collaboration, powerful learning, and a culture of high achievement to ensure postsecondary success for all students.


Job Summary
 

The Freshman Success Coach is responsible for the successful creation and implementation of freshmen teacher teams and related structures and supports in identified NCS partner schools. Using Uchicago Consortium’s research on the imperative of the 9th grade year and their frameworks for improving student experiences, the Freshman Success Coach will work in partnership with school-based leaders to transform and improve freshman success programs and approaches. The goal is to develop systems, conditions, capacity for increasing student course performance, and improving student experience in the freshman year.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in self-reflection, examination of identity and role in systems of oppression and to boldly challenge inequities.
  • Support our Chicago Public Schools partners via coaching to develop processes, structures, and tools for supporting equitable student outcomes in the Freshman Year.
  • Build partnerships with identified school grade level teams/team leads and administrators to: improve grade-level on-track rates;  improve student course performance as reflected in GPA; and increase college readiness and access indicators for students.
  • Coach freshman team leaders to build their capacity to successfully perform their role in leading school change; effectively facilitating high functioning teams, utilizing Continuous Improvement tools, data analysis, and problem solving; and creating conditions that support equitable student outcomes
  • Co-design and co-facilitate a professional learning community around freshman success for NCS partner schools and more broadly as part of NCS’ professional development offerings.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with identified school staff and maintain record and documentation of contacts and progress.
  • Collect, track, monitor and share progress towards goals through ongoing communication with identified school partners, FS team, and pertinent NCS teams.
  • Regularly communicate the work and results to NCS and its school partners.
  • Collaborate with NCS staff to articulate an integrated coaching model approach to increase freshman success.
  • Work collaboratively with NCS staff to develop and sustain vision and mission for the work of the organization.
  • Utilizes in-depth experience in the identification and establishment of collaborative partnerships with schools.
  • Plays a medium to large role in program evaluation and improvement efforts.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:

  • Master’s degree in education.

Experience:

  • Teaching at the middle or high school level.

  • Experience forming and facilitating teacher teams.

  • Strong background in curriculum, instruction and assessment.

  • Coaching experience.

  • Experience with Continuous Improvement framework & tools.

  • Experience with freshman academies or similar structures.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Driver's License

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Ability to integrate and effectively utilize technology for professional productivity, including word processing, presentation (PPT), Zoom, Google Meets, and spreadsheet software.​
