Summary

You will respond to and fulfill requests for documents under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). This includes analyzing documents to determine exempt and nonexempt materials under the provisions of Michigan FOIA and communicating effectively with faculty, staff, and all levels of leadership regarding FOIA requests and responses.

You must act with a high level of confidentiality in this role as you work with sensitive materials and support other administrative responsibilities for the office. You will be an integral part of a four-person collaborative team reporting to the Chief Freedom of Information Officer within the Office of the Vice President for Communications. 


Responsibilities*
  • Interpret and respond to document requests as allowed through the FOIA process. 
  • Use project management skills to prioritize, initiate, and complete tasks.
  • Use your analytical skills to review records and identify compliant courses of action. 
  • Analyze documents to separate exempt records from nonexempt materials.
  • Track requests and report on outputs.
  • Work with tight deadlines and adapt to changes.
  • Provide thorough solutions to business issues.
  • Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and all levels of leadership regarding FOIA requests and responses.

Required Qualifications*
  • Three or more years of administrative or paralegal experience in a complex or legal organization.
  • Proficiency working with electronic records.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge and application of project management skills.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Four or more years of experience processing FOIA requests in a higher education or government environment.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating effectively and diplomatically with all levels of staff and leadership.
