Description
This position is located on a Forest Service unit performing a variety of duties in support of the unit’s trails program. Serves as a leader on a seasonal trail crew that maintains, repairs, and builds trails throughout the Forest Service unit to ensure protection of wildlife habitat and water quality in addition to improving recreational access to forest lands. Builds trails with gravel and associated materials, restores impacted areas, and replaces signage as needed. Prepares construction materials, ensures proper tool maintenance, and reports work completed. Plans and implements the logistics of projects associated with trail maintenance and reconstruction projects. May performs trail log, condition, and prescription surveys. Explains regulations concerning trails maintenance specific to the Wilderness Act. Inspects assigned areas to determine compliance with regulations or specifications. Oversees routine maintenance of trails at dispersed recreation sites including cleanup and naturalizing. May interact with forest visitors and when assigned, educates visitors covering trail maintenance and cleanup. Qualifications
General/Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-4 level: Applicants must have six months of general experience (any type of work that demonstrated the ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation) AND six months of specialized experience that is directly related to the work of the position. Examples of general experience are defined as one or more of the following: Performed farm/ranch labor, such as feeding and tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; Cleaned tools and equipment; Worked in a greenhouse or nursery moving, watering, and tending plants and performing other general labor; Worked on a landscape or construction crew; Other work experience, paid or unpaid, that demonstrates an ability to learn and perform the work of this position. Examples of specialized experience are defined as one or more of the following: Forestry aid or technician work in recreation such as provided visitors with information and collecting monies; or performed crew based forestry related support work such as recreation trail or facility maintenance; OR Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable); The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university and include courses that are related to the occupation of the position; OR an appropriate combination of experience and education above high school as described above. For the GS-5 level: Applicants must have at least one year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience are defined as one or more of the following: Inspected recreation area clean-up operations and performed safety hazard analysis of public recreation use areas; Patrolled wilderness to ensure that areas were operated, used, and maintained in accordance with wilderness management plans; Performed site maintenance, including cleanup and naturalizing at widely dispersed sites; Gathered, compiled, and reported recreation program data for use in monitoring and assessment activities and summarized data for use in recreation data management systems; OR Bachelor's degree or four years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable); OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
