Description
Job Description Texas A&M Forest Service is seeking a highly motivated Forest Economist to join a talented team of professionals in the Forest Analytics Department. This individual will be part of an integrated team that works to deliver tools and information to support the agency mission of ensuring the state's trees, forests and related natural resources are protected and sustained for the benefit of all Texans. Responsibilities -Collect and provide data on the key elements in the timberland property tax formula, -Prepare timberland management costs report and conduct analysis and provide advice on timberland property taxes to the Comptroller’s Office. -Periodically analyze and report on the economic impact of the forest sector in the state and provide assistance to the online economic impact query tool on the Texas Forest Info website (http://texasforestinfo.com). -Monitor forest products market and publish bi-monthly and annually Texas Timber Price Trends Report. -Initiate and conduct economic analysis related to forest sectors and write analytical reports based on the results, including timber supply, timber investment, ecosystem services, urban and community forests, mass timber, trade policy, and other issues. -Report results of woodland owner surveys and track timberland ownership in Texas. -Conduct educational seminars on timber tax issues. -Provide support and expertise to the Forest Resource Analyst and Wood Utilization Specialist, including publishing annual timber harvest and utilization report, timber damage assessments following major storms and other natural disasters, etc. -Conduct market studies and provide economic data to the forest products industry, other state and federal agencies and economic development interests. -Other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Education and Experience Required Education: Masters in Forest Economics Preferred Education: Undergraduate degree in forestry Preferred Experience: Economic and forest policy decision support analysis; forest property taxation; federal income tax; forest law Knowledge, Skills and Abilities -Extensive knowledge of economic principles, theories and practices, micro- and macro-economic analysis, econometrics, with an emphasis on forestry issues and management. -Proficiency in MS Office and statistical software (e.g., SAS, R, SPSS). -Knowledge of economic research methodologies and modeling techniques and applications. -Knowledge and skill related to geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial analysis. -Skills in the use of software systems for modeling timber supply and economic impact (e.g., IMPLAN, SRTS) are highly desirable. -Proficiency in analyzing FIA data and other forest resource data. The most competitive applicants will also demonstrate: (1) ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms; (2) strong applied research and technical ability; (3) experience delivering economic and policy information using a variety of methods including online tools; (4) ability to work independently and as a member of a team; and (5) multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Licenses, Certificates and Registrations Required: Valid Texas Driver's License or ability to acquire one within 30 days of employment.
