Foreperson Grounds

The Rutgers Division of Intercollegiate Athletics sponsors 24 intercollegiate sports, comprised of 14 women’s and 10 men’s programs, that compete at the Division I level. The Scarlet Knights are members of the prestigious Big Ten Conference, the nation’s premier academic and athletic conference, after officially joining the league on July 1, 2014. Known as “The Birthplace of College Football, Rutgers hosted Princeton on Nov. 6, 1869 in the first intercollegiate football game, with RU earning a 6-4 victory.

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Foreperson Grounds for Rutgers Athletics. This position assists the Turf Manager in the planning, managing, and oversight of the athletic grounds crew.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Assists with the hiring, training, and supervision of all full-time and part-time grounds staff, including seven grounds workers.
• Interacts with building coordinators and vendors on a regular basis and during special events to ensure proper set-ups and the satisfactory completion of all tasks.
• Assists in the the seeding, irrigation, painting and daily upkeep of all athletic fields, common areas as well as the beautification of all athletic areas.
• Operates a variety of grounds keeping equipment (e.g. mowers, tractors, dump trucks, bobcats, infield groomer, snow blowers, spray and spreading equipment, and other implements and devices).
• Conducts safety meetings and performs routine testing of all equipment and products; analyzes turf conditions to determine action plans for the proper maintenance practices and/or pest treatment required.
• Maintains professional knowledge in the sports turf management field by attending conferences and workshops.

• Bachelor’s degree in Plant Biology, Turf Management, Horticulture, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of maintaining sports turf fields and/or golf courses.
• A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience.

• New Jersey DEP Commercial Pesticide Applicator certification/license (minimum of categories 3A and 3B), or can obtain within one year of starting the position.
• New Jersey Professional Fertilizer Applicator certification/license, or can obtain within one year of starting the position.

• Ability to program satellite controllers to manage irrigation systems on athletic fields and grounds.
• Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.

• Experienced operator of grounds and turf maintenance equipment (e.g. reel and rotary mowers, tractors 30hp or greater, sprayers, spreaders, aerators, infield groomers, snow removal equipment, etc.).

• Computer and similar devices for monitoring weather conditions and forecasts.

• This position requires the ability to lift fifty (50) pounds, work with seed, pesticides, fertilizers and similar products, work in adverse weather conditions, and work other than normal working hours and emergency situations.
• Nights and weekends will be required.
• Position will assist with snow removal.
