Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, in conjunction with ECU Health Medical Center, provides a broad range of clinical services in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology for hospital and clinic patients. The Department houses residency, cytopathology, forensic pathology, and surgical pathology fellowship programs. The mission of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine is to improve the health and well-being of the citizens of eastern North Carolina and beyond by delivering high quality pathology services, by providing exemplary education for medical students, residents, and other health care professionals, and by creating new knowledge through research. As the field of Pathology continues to evolve, the Department will continue to uphold its commitment to provide the best diagnosis and treatment monitoring services to the citizens of eastern North Carolina.
Job Duties
Reviewing Investigative reports to determine jurisdiction.
Determining the need and extent of postmortem examination.
Direction of assistants in preparing bodies for autopsy including appropriate photography for documentation.
Performing autopsies and obtaining appropriate specimens for laboratory analysis.
Performing microscopic analysis when appropriate.
Determination of cause and manner of death.
Preparation and completion of reports of findings in a timely manner.
Review of current literature as necessary to assist in formulation of decisions.
Provide expert witness testimony in court.
Teaching of medical students, residents, fellows and law enforcement personnel.
Consult with prosecution and defense attorneys in preparation for court proceedings.
Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b. 457).  This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS). Minimum Education/Experience
MD or DO from an appropriately accredited school of medicine or osteopathy or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification.
North Carolina Medical License is required.
Board certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
MD or DO from an appropriately accredited school of medicine or osteopathy or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification.
North Carolina Medical License is required.
Board certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Knowledge of principles, practices, techniques and advances in the field of Forensic Pathology and medicolegal death investigation.
