The goal of the Ford program is to increase the presence of underrepresented minorities on American college and university faculties. Approximately 40 fellowships are offered annually for three years of doctoral funding.

Eligibility
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Bachelor’s degree by the start of grant period
  • Graduating seniors, first- and second-year graduate students, others with limited graduate work
  • Enrolled in or planning to enroll in an eligible research-based program leading to a PhD or ScD degree at a U.S. educational institution

Criteria for Selection
  • Demonstrate superior academic achievement
  • Are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level
  • Show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers
  • Are prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students
  • Belong to a group whose under-representation in the American professoriate has been severe and longstanding: Alaska Native, Black/African American, Mexican American, Native American, Native Pacific Islander, Puerto Rican

There is no Princeton process for the Ford Scholarship. Students apply directly to the Ford Foundation with:
