Position Summary Information


General Information
The Forbes Center for the Performing Arts is hiring for Student House Managers for the 2023-2024 academic year. Students will work at the Forbes Center in all five performance venues, select performances/events at Wilson Hall and Atlantic Union Bank Center and for university/recruitment events held at the Center.
Students work an average of 12 to 16 hours per week. Students report 1.5 hours prior to weeknight evening performances and 1.5 hours prior to weekend matinee/evening performances. Special event hours will vary.
House Managers work until the end of every performance. Work shifts are shared between a team of House Managers. Students must be able to work shifts every weekend as needed. Work shifts vary from 2.5 hours to 6 hours. During the school year, there are no performance shifts when the university is closed for holiday breaks.
Duties and Responsibilities
Student House Managers play a vital role in making the Forbes Center experience an enjoyable one for audiences and performers alike. House Managers act as the Center’s front-of- house liaison with audiences for five state-of-the-art performance venues.
House Manager duties include the following:
  • They work with our ushers to greet patrons, distribute programs and audio enhancement devices, scan tickets at the door, escort patrons to their reserved seating, provide information about the facility, and ensure that “VIP” and handicapped patrons are properly seated. 
  • They are also called upon to control unauthorized access to the venues, help facilitate latecomer seating, enforce theatre policies and direct the safe and timely evacuation of the audience in the case of an emergency. 
  • They coordinate with the stage manager for every show and the box office staff regarding special seating issues. 
  • They provide group event set up assistance for pre-or-post show events in the venue as needed. 
  • They also prepare house count, and performance reports. 
  • They prepare the public spaces for audience arrival, alerting the housekeeping crew is there are cleaning issues.
  • They complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Candidates must be a JMU student in order to apply.
They must be able to work on nights and weekends.
They must be a strong manager, have excellent organizational and time-management skills, be able to work independently, and be able to inspire and motivate others.
Candidate must have excellent customer service, communications, sales training and supervisory skills.
They must maintain a positive demeanor and be able to remain calm under pressure and be responsive to the needs of audience and staff members.
A love of the arts and an ability to share that enthusiasm with audience members is a plus.
Conditions of Employment
Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
Students must have a 2.0 or better cumulative GPA.
