Department Description

Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self-supporting auxiliary that provides housing and dining services to approximately 15,000 undergraduate, graduate, and students with families who live in on-campus residential facilities (university owner/managed and Public-Private-Partnerships), as well as providing residential, retail and catering dining services for the campus community. SHDS also provides student support and conference housing services to the campus and general community. Job Summary

Under general supervision of unit Managers and Supervisors, rings up sales, collects monies, & makes change as necessary during each customer transaction. Process cash, credit, student & employee ID cards at the POS terminal. Maintain cash handling, deposit, & change bank procedures consistent with University policies & Dining Services procedures. Maintains accuracy & accountability for all cash & non-cash equivalent transactions completed during assigned shift. Accurately secures credit/debit & card holder information, consistent with Payment Card Industry compliance. Verifies & submits daily records of receipts, payment vouchers, cash transmittal & refunds at end of each cashiering shift. Accurately completes all cashiering forms & documentation utilized as part of the cashiering reconciliation processes. Verifies accuracy of cash deposit, identifying any overage or shortage on a per shift basis. Handles customer complaints promptly & advises manager or supervisor in cases of cash/cost discrepancies or customer questions. Interact with internal & external customers by demonstrating professionalism, enthusiasm, integrity & a welcoming attitude including greeting customers, interacting in a pleasant manner, anticipating customer needs, & displaying a positive demeanor. Keeps current with daily menu & pricing structure to ensure ringing accuracy. Utilizing pars set forth by supervisor, determine if additional product is needed to maintain adequate in-stocks. Retrieve product or deliveries from remote location. Receive & review incoming shipments, & confirm quality & safety of product entering the facility, as well as accurate product delivery & invoicing. Put away products from deliveries. Storefront products to display in an attractive fashion. Complete assigned inventory for facility in an accurate & timely fashion. Set up machines & cases that will be utilized for service, including but not limited to coffee, smoothie & pastries. Prepare & serve hot/cold food items/beverages utilizing all required equipment & preparation techniques in a safe & timely fashion. Keep preparation, storage & service areas clean/debris free; proactively identify & correct hazards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Stand continuously (up to 8hrs with regularly scheduled breaks).
  • Swipe cards, handle cash and complete cashier logs on a continual basis.
  • Lift up to 30lbs on a regular basis to perform stocking.
  • Position requires frequent daily bending, stooping, reaching overhead, pushing, pulling, walking, standing, and lifting material and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Some tasks may have a high rate of repetition, making the same motion or use of a tool (with the force of up to 25 pounds) up to 3 hours at a time (between regularly scheduled breaks). Occasional use of step ladder or ladder.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • THIS IS A PARTIAL-YEAR CAREER POSITION: Employee will be scheduled to work an average 70% annually. This position is subject to furlough (June-September and could be scheduled up to 90 days) and curtailment periods (spring and winter holiday breaks where operations are suspended up to 21 days due to the academic calendar).Be flexible with job assignments. Cross covers and assists all areas as needed. This position is subject to completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services, at no charge to the applicant. Work flexible/variable schedule (sometimes in excess of scheduled shift) including occasional overtime, evenings/nights, weekends and holidays, occasionally on short notice to meet operational needs. Vacation may be limited during peak operational times. Use Personal Protective Equipment [PPE] such as hot mitts, safety shoes, goggles and cut resistant gloves. Work in areas where there is frequent contact with residents and guests and that can be hot, cold, dusty, wet and/or smelly.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:           

  • Customer service experience to cooperate with public and other staff members and convey a helpful, positive attitude. Cashier experience in a customer driven retail or hospitality environment.
  • Experience in cashiering and/or cash handling to process cash, checks and charge payments, operate a cash register and POS system.
  • Experience replenishing inventory, stocking shelves and service equipment in a timely manner. Experience preparing hot and/or cold food and/or beverages.
  • Experience receiving retail and/or food product.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Skill to maintain a sanitary, safe and organized personal work area .Skill to differentiate products’ composition, biodegradability, nutrition, etc. Knowledge of proper procedures for lifting, handling broken glass and skill to use wet floor signs when mopping floors or cleaning up spills.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with and provide excellent customer service to a diverse campus community; communication skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Arithmetic skills to perform basic calculations, give change to customers and balance cash drawer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:            

  • Experience with computers including software programs/applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, automated cashiering system, etc.).

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Customer service skills to handle difficult, sensitive, and/or confidential issues; and to effectively communicate and interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds in a cooperative/professional manner.
  • Skill to check food temperatures throughout all HACCP steps including food preparation, meal service, and storage; complete HACCP logs, date, label and store all foods.
