Under the Food Service Manager or Cook's direction, the food preparation assistant helps with food preparation, service, and storage. Responsible for ensuring compliance with sanitary health codes, including but not limited to cleaning and sanitizing surfaces, utensils, and equipment; disposing of food and other waste products; storing food properly.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be 16 years or older to meet age requirements for the position set by the NYS Department of Health.
  • Able to work flexible hours, including early mornings and weekends as needed.
  • Able to lift 20-50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possess a valid Suffolk County Department of Health Food Managers Certificate.
  • 1-2 years previous experience with increasing responsibility in a kitchen. Knowledge of generally accepted nutrition guidelines.
  • Able to operate commercial kitchen equipment.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Administrative Responsibilities:

Management – 15%

  • Ensure cleanliness of food preparation and delivery areas.
  • Maintain effective organization of food commodities.

Coordination/Operation – 80%

  • Wash and sanitize pots, pans, and utensils as directed.
  • Sanitize kitchen surfaces and equipment regularly throughout the day.
  • Assist with meal preparation as directed, including, but not limited to, cleaning fresh food, weighing ingredients, chopping and grinding meats, vegetables, and fruits, watching, turning, and stirring food.
  • Prepare food trays for buffet service.
  • Salad bar or dessert preparation as assigned.
  • Properly seal and store unused food products.
  • Perform other related duties as necessary.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
