Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


The Facility Maintenance Technician – Building Trades performs under the direction of the Renovations Supervisor.
  • Position is considered to be fully functioning in construction.
  • Provide career tracks including but not limited to Cabinetmaking, Carpentry, Locksmith, Masonry, Painting, Plastering, and Roofing that perform a variety of tasks ranging from routine and unskilled to highly skilled.
  • Apply methods and general procedures of applicable trades/maintenance techniques and develop skills in procedures, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment appropriate to trade.
  • Tasks may include maintenance, repair, placement, fabrication, installation, alteration, construction, and design of facility components requiring the application of skills in planning, problem-solving, attention to detail, teamwork, communication, and knowledge of and adherence to safety policies and regulations.
  • Position may serve as lead technician and/or crew leader, directing the work of others.
  • Function as lead person for those projects in the position's trade specialty; coordinates work of these projects and assign tasks to crew or assisting Facility Maintenance Technician.

Minimum Experience / Education:


Required Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
University Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Education Skills and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years experience. (experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.)
  • Experience and ability to follow applicable building codes is preferred.
  • Experience, knowledge and use of symbols and principles involved in plans, blueprints, and drawings to identify work or tasks.
  • Experience in performing routine maintenance and repairs on doors, door closers, windows, desk and performing routine preventive maintenance inspections of buildings and facilities.
  • Experience in repairing cracks in wallboard, and holes in ceilings or tiles, paint walls, signs, caulk joints, and cracks in walls.
  • Experience in replacing ceiling tiles, stair treads, door and cabinet fixtures, light bulbs and tubes.
  • Experience and ability to adjust, connect, or disconnect wiring, piping, tubing, and other parts, using hand tools or power tools.
  • Experience measuring materials or distances, using square, measuring tape, or ruler to lay out work.
  • Ability and experience identifying fire extinguishers that need replacement.
  • Experience providing technical assistance and mentor other facility maintenance technicians.
  • Effective and excellent communication skills to include written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills desired and preferred.
  • Knowledge and skill with Google Chrome, Microsoft Word, and Excel, and willingness to learn new programs, computer knowledge.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision or instruction and to complete work with a high level of competence and professionalism and in compliance with generally accepted trade practices.
  • Ability to effectively work/interact in a team environment and to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork with co-workers, visitors, building occupants, and the entire campus community.
  • Ability to operate assigned vehicles on and/or off-campus.
