Position Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Student Programs, The Fitness & Wellness Programs Manager will be responsible for the daily management, promotion and operation of Ritchie Center Fitness and Wellness Programs and the Nagel Hall Fitness Facility for the University Community and Ritchie Center members; including but not limited to sales ($150,000+), program scheduling, marketing and program promotion, human resources, group fitness, virtual fitness, personal training, nutrition coaching, wellness coaching, wellness education, in-body assessments, certifications, special events, youth fitness camps and related programs and operations.

This position delivers an exceptional customer experience to all visitors of the Ritchie Center through managing the front-line interactions that customers will have. These include parking, facility entry and access, transaction experience, facility quality, communication, safety, and servicing each customers needs.

This position delivers programming that engages the University of Denver student population to assist with the recruitment and retention of students. Programming should focus on both traditional and non-traditional avenues and should focus on the health, wellness, and education of students.

Position will be required to work a varied schedule that will include evenings and week-ends.

Essential Functions

Fitness & Wellness Program

Advance Fitness and Wellness through programs, events, and services that promote a holistic experience at the Ritchie Center, Nagel Fitness Facility, and Kennedy Mountain Campus.

Achieve and grow the following results for the Division of Kennedy Mountain Campus, Wellness & Recreation:

  • Achieve $150,000+ in Fitness and Wellness program registrations.
  • Contribute to overall Division goal of engaging 80% of students.
  • Develop and implement a peer wellness coaching program to support and guide DU students in developing their wellness playbook.
  • Develop and implement a group fitness and wellness program that offers 20-30 classes weekly.
  • Develop and implement a personal training program, a wellness program and a nutrition coaching program that meets the needs of the University community and Ritchie Center members.
  • Develop and implement a year-round program focused on strength and conditioning of youth athletes.
  • Coordinate weekly wellness education clinics, workshops, and fitness/wellness special events at the Ritchie Center, across the campus, and virtually.
  • Coordinate new member facility orientations, in-body assessments, and wellness consultations.
  • Develop quarterly recruitment plan to educate students, faculty and staff on current fitness and wellness offerings.
  • Use creativity to offer various fitness formats for students and members, keeping up with fitness trends.

Daily Management and Oversight:

  • Manage day of programs and resolve issues, problems, or questions.
  • Ensure programs are properly staffed and supervised.
  • Reserve facility space a minimum of 60 days in advance with the Assistant Director, Ritchie Center Operations.
  • Maintain an accurate website to ensure correct schedule and up to date offerings.

Fitness Center Operations 

Responsible for daily operations and management of satellite fitness facility in Nagel Hall and preventative maintenance and equipment management in Coors Fitness Center.

Nagel Fitness Facility

  • Daily Venue Operations
    • Develop and implement checklists, standard operating procedures, and guidelines for Nagel Fitness Facility.
    • Ensure adequate cleaning of the facility and equipment.
  • Maintain Facility Equipment
    • Monitor overall maintenance activity including weekly inspections, preventative maintenance, repair log and management and warranties.
    • Schedule maintenance with 3rd party vendors as needed to repair and replace facility equipment.
    • Verify completed maintenance and documentation.
    • Ensure functionality of any technology including but not limited to; Pelotons, TV’s, surveillance cameras, etc.
  • Manage Equipment Inventory
    • Ensure adequate inventory levels of auxiliary fitness equipment.

Coors Fitness Center

  • Maintain Facility Equipment
    • Monitor overall maintenance activity including weekly inspections, preventative maintenance, repair log and management and warranties.
    • Schedule maintenance with 3rd party vendors as needed to repair and replace facility equipment.
    • Verify completed maintenance and documentation.
    • Ensure functionality of any technology including but not limited to; Pelotons, bikes, treadmills.
  • Manage Equipment Inventory
    • Ensure adequate inventory levels of auxiliary fitness equipment.

People Management 

The Fitness and Wellness Programs Manager will oversee approximately 25-40 part-time staff members. They are responsible for the following:

  • Recruit, interview, hire and manage all Group Fitness Instructors, Personal Trainers, Wellness Coaches and Youth Fitness Coaches.
  • Provide ongoing monthly training for part time employees including operating and safety protocols, job specific responsibilities and coaching education.
  • Ensure all staff have completed required certifications and training prior to working; maintain certification expiration dates and ongoing training.
  • Schedule all staff and ensure coverage at programs.
  • Manage bi-weekly payroll to budgeted parameters.

Communication 

The Fitness and Wellness Programs Manager will communicate with students, faculty/staff, alumni, and Denver community members daily including:  

  • Consistent and timely communication with students and members to inform about program offerings.
  • Quarterly surveys and feedback response on Group Fitness and Wellness.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Staff Management: ability to motivate and build relationships with part-time staff to achieve desired outcome in relation to exciting and effective fitness and wellness offerings.
  • Customer Service: ability to engage and strengthen our relationships with students, alumni, and the Denver community.
  • Creativity: thinks outside the box to create unique offerings for students and members to engage and promote a healthy lifestyle and wellbeing on campus.
  • Physical Demands: Employee is regularly required to be able to operate work-related equipment. The employee must be able to frequently move about the facility with the capability of transporting equipment or objects up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to effectively communicate verbally with customers and employees of the university.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, percentages, and participation statistics. Also, familiarity with financial concepts such as budget development/forecasting, depreciation, contribution margin, etc.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.
  • Other skills and abilities: ability to work with the public with tact and judgment. Excellent organizational skills required.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate Degree
  • Minimum of 1 year of related experience
  • Personal training certification (NASM, ACE, NSCA, ACSM preferred)
  • CPR; First Aid; AED; Blood Borne Pathogen; Concussion Training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience
  • Personal Training certification (NASM, ACE, NSCA, ACSM preferred
  • Group Fitness Certification (ACE, AFAA, ACSM)

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment when completing office related work.
  • In program management occurs outdoors on sports fields or courts, or in indoor gymnasiums and studios.
  • Occasionally may be required to lead a program or activity.
  • Noise level is moderate to loud.
  • Physical Activities

  • Regularly on feet managing programs during evening hours when student programs are taking place.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 50lbs. with assistance.

    Salary Grade Number:
    The salary grade for the position is 8.

    Salary Range:
    The salary range for this position is $55,000-$60,000
