Description of Work Unit | Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities. Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) is headed by the Director of RMI and Chief Risk Officer for the university. RMI works closely with risk partners across the university campus. The RMI team is comprised of experts in the field of insurance, claims management, risk management, loss prevention and control, ergonomics, liability, workers compensation and temporary modified duty. |
Position Summary | The Fit for Duty program’s goal is to help the university and participating departments ensure that an employee can perform a specific job and related set of tasks under the specific conditions present within a job. Employees must be able to perform the essential functions of a job in a safe, productive, and effective manner. Those who are unable to perform a jobs essential functions may put themselves and others at risk. An essential part of the fit for duty process is a physical demands analysis (PDA). The PDA must be conducted in order to develop a fit for duty test, as this test is based on the demands of the job. Following a PDA an appropriate job specific test can be developed (in collaboration with medical providers who develop valid and reliable fit for duty tests) to ensure an employee is able to perform the essential functions of that job. Although physical demands analyses and fit for duty testing are typically performed prior to hiring an employee, analysis and testing may also take place post-injury to ensure an employee is able to return to the job and perform all its essential functions. The Fit for Duty Coordinator will act as a liaison between departments, HR, OEO, Purchasing and Medical Providers to establish and monitor a pre-employment fit for duty program. This position with be responsible for working with all parties in the fit for duty process. The Fit for Duty Coordinator reports to the Ergonomics Program Manager and coordinates the fit for duty program, ensure all test records are properly recorded, assist with providing results to appropriate parties, assist with reviewing the essential functions of a job, and assist with conducting physical demands analysis (required for fit for duty testing), and collaborating with the department and medical providers in the fit for duty test development. This position will help ensure vendors are performing appropriately and meet CSU expectations. This position will assist with test set up procedures, share results and collaborate with participating departments etc. This position will also assist with coordination of the return to work (RTW)/temporary modified duty (TMD) program in collaboration with CSU’s Workers’ Compensation Program Manager and assists and collaborates with the Workers’ Compensation Program Manager following an injury with aspects of the fit for duty process for the injured employee. |
