Description of Work Unit
Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) is headed by the Director of RMI and Chief Risk Officer for the university. RMI works closely with risk partners across the university campus. The RMI team is comprised of experts in the field of insurance, claims management, risk management, loss prevention and control, ergonomics, liability, workers compensation and temporary modified duty.
Position Summary
The Fit for Duty program’s goal is to help the university and participating departments ensure that an employee can perform a specific job and related set of tasks under the specific conditions present within a job. Employees must be able to perform the essential functions of a job in a safe, productive, and effective manner. Those who are unable to perform a jobs essential functions may put themselves and others at risk. An essential part of the fit for duty process is a physical demands analysis (PDA). The PDA must be conducted in order to develop a fit for duty test, as this test is based on the demands of the job. Following a PDA an appropriate job specific test can be developed (in collaboration with medical providers who develop valid and reliable fit for duty tests) to ensure an employee is able to perform the essential functions of that job. Although physical demands analyses and fit for duty testing are typically performed prior to hiring an employee, analysis and testing may also take place post-injury to ensure an employee is able to return to the job and perform all its essential functions.
The Fit for Duty Coordinator will act as a liaison between departments, HR, OEO, Purchasing and Medical Providers to establish and monitor a pre-employment fit for duty program. This position with be responsible for working with all parties in the fit for duty process.
The Fit for Duty Coordinator reports to the Ergonomics Program Manager and coordinates the fit for duty program, ensure all test records are properly recorded, assist with providing results to appropriate parties, assist with reviewing the essential functions of a job, and assist with conducting physical demands analysis (required for fit for duty testing), and collaborating with the department and medical providers in the fit for duty test development. This position will help ensure vendors are performing appropriately and meet CSU expectations. This position will assist with test set up procedures, share results and collaborate with participating departments etc. This position will also assist with coordination of the return to work (RTW)/temporary modified duty (TMD) program in collaboration with CSU’s Workers’ Compensation Program Manager and assists and collaborates with the Workers’ Compensation Program Manager following an injury with aspects of the fit for duty process for the injured employee.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Currently working towards Bachelor’s degree or higher in health sciences (health & exercise, sport science, occupational therapy or related field), occupational or environmental health, vocational education or related field. (Must obtain degree within 2 years of hire date.)
  • Understanding of basic anatomy, kinesiology, physiology etc.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively multiple groups both internal and external to the University
  • Must have strong organizational skills and a high level of attention to detail.
  • Must have strong computer skills and knowledge of programs including but not limited to MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
  • Ability to gather and organize data from multiple sources
  • Ability to efficiently research, analyze and organize information
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred
  • Basic understanding of ergonomics
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with web based software programs and system
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic medical terminology
  • Spanish language proficiency

Essential Duties

Duty/Responsibility
Pre-employment:
  • Coordinate the pre-employment testing process for participating departments.
  • Work with appropriate parties (both inside and outside of CSU) to ensure that program meets CSU requirements. 
  • Assist departments in working with medical providers, fit for duty evaluators, HR, Procurement and OEO to develop a quality and consistent program. 
  • Maintain all records associated with the fit for duty process. Enter data and record all appropriate information within the proper online system/ database.
  • Work with departments to develop setup procedures and protocols, share and discuss results with participating departments, supervisors etc. 
  • Assist departments in the referral for fit for duty testing, ensure results are received and filed and address issues that may arise.
  • Maintain a Website of Fit for Duty Providers and the process 
  • When appropriate provide pre-employment evaluation results to medical provider and place in claim file.
  • Monitor claims to ensure that the employee and department are progressing the employee back to full duty position
  • Perform other fit for duty program duties as assigned.

  • Assist ergonomics program manager with physical demands analysis (PDA.) Example, collect background information on the job, requirements and other functions/ tasks performed in a job (weights, forces, heights, reaches etc.), take notes, transport equipment, enter data into appropriate software etc.
  • Assist ergonomics program manager with maintaining/ tracking all PDA data, analyses and reports
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Under the direction of the Ergonomics Program Manager perform office ergonomic evaluations. 
  • Assist ergonomics Program Manager with industrial (non-office) ergonomic evaluations
  • Under the direction of the WC and Ergonomics Program Manager assist with the setup of RTW/TMD worksites. . 
  • Assist the ergonomics program manager with the ergonomics lab/ showroom. This includes but is not limited to helping employees with office ergonomics equipment selection (i.e. chairs, keyboards, tables, etc.) track loans, pick up and drop off equipment, cleaning equipment and assist with maintaining inventory.. Collaborate with admin assistants and/or students helping with the tracking and record keeping of products as needed. 
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Duty Category Return to Work
Duty/Responsibility
  • Under the direction of the Workers’ Compensation Program Manager, work with the WC team, medical providers, injured employees, departments and other pertinent entities to the claim providing temporary modified duty and return to work plans for employees with a compensable work-related injury claim.
  • Under the direction of the WC Program Manager review all claims that have restrictions and follow up with injured worker and department to ensure safe return to work and recovery (Example, meeting with departments to explain CSU’s RTW program, assisting departments and injured workers with understanding restrictions, reviewing job sites to ensure proper setup, implementing and monitoring return to work plans etc.
  • Under the direction of the WC Program Manager assist with transitioning the employee back to work as quickly and safely as possible, assist with set up of Temporary Modified Duty for employees when needed, and develop TMD sites.
  • Under the direction of the WC Program Manager coordinate the RTW process in accordance with program’s protocols.
  • Maintain adequate records and work flows in CSU’s RMIS (Origami.)
  • Under the direction of the WC Program Manager perform other duties as assigned.
