FULL-TIME/NON-PERMANENT FISH HATCHERY TECHNICIAN SOOS CREEK HATCHERY WDFW HATCHERIES DIVISION Auburn, Washington STANDBY DUTIES ARE NOT CURRENTLY ASSIGNED HOUSING IS NOT PROVIDED Anticipated Appointment Length: 9 Months May 1, 2022 – January 31, 2023 Please note: Salary listed does not include the 5% premium pay granted to all King County employees. In addition to the base salary, this position is eligible for 5% premium pay for positions located in King County. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) currently operates 75 hatchery facilities, the majority dedicated to producing salmon and/or steelhead. Hatcheries have operated in Washington State for more than a century, beginning with a facility on the Kalama River in 1895. Fish Hatchery Technicians support the mission by performing scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties at Soos Creek, Palmer Ponds, and Icy Creek facilities within a complex, rearing anadromous and non-anadromous species of fish. With that in mind, With your experience, you will perform scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties at Soos Creek Hatchery, and assist with rearing anadromous (fish born in freshwater who spend most of their lives in saltwater and return to freshwater to spawn). The optimal applicant leads by example, has a positive can-do attitude, is eager to work hard, and has excellent fish husbandry skills. Duties Our Fish Hatchery Technician, Feeds fish according to pond populations and weight samples. Adjust feed size and amount fed as directed. Monitors egg and fish production and disinfects and enumerates eggs. Assists in identifying, sorting, and sampling species for spawning and adult distribution. Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health. Identifies marked adults and collects tags/marks for bio sampling. Assist in inventorying and grading fish populations, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants. Picks eggs loss by hand or using equipment and incubates for facility programs or shipments. Collects adult fish by hook and line, seining, and volunteer or non-volunteer fish trap. Assist in identifying all targeted and non-targeted species, gender, stock origin and condition of maturity when trapping and spawning adults. Fertilizes eggs with sperm, according to pre-determined ratios using established spawning protocols and HGMP requirements. Record daily fed, mortalities in rearing units, water temperatures and other hatchery related data. Reports changes in fish behavior and rearing environments to supervisors. Maintains proper water flow and rearing environments as directed. Actively identifies safety hazards and takes action or recommends remedies as appropriate. Perform maintenance duties in and around hatchery and residences to preserve a clean and safe working environment as directed. Applies herbicides or controlled burning for weed control as directed. Maintain road access to residences, hatchery by plowing, grading, and snow blowers. Service and maintain small gas engines and hatchery related equipment or structures. Travels to other hatcheries to assist with heavy workloads. Pest control (rodents, cats, dogs, ants, wasps, birds) in a humane, non-lethal manner. Done in an environmentally sensitive manner. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: Work is conducted outside in all weather conditions while performing strenuous physical activities. Schedule: Typically, Monday-Friday, 8:00-4:30. At times, this position may work 10 days on 4 days off, adjusted by workload. Travel Requirements: Travel as needed to meet work demands. Tools and Equipment: Employee will work with hand & power tools, lawn care equipment, egg picking machines, passenger vehicles, CWT identification equipment, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engine, computers, and software. Customer Interactions: Communicates effectively with public and volunteers. Interacts with small community groups and individual constituents on a regular basis. Standby: Standby duties are not currently assigned. The employee is responsible for overseeing the facility for the remaining 16 hours of the day. While on standby this position will work ten (10) days on and be off four (4) days (Thursday-Sunday). Housing: Housing is not provided for this position.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED. License: Valid driver’s license. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Six (6) months experience working at a fish hatchery.
