This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (ODFW) Wildlife Division located in Tygh Valley, Oregon. Are you passionate about the management of the state’s wildlife resources? What you will do: Remove, construct, and repair barbed and smooth wire and electric fences using hand tools, wire rollers, ATV’s and wheel tractor with auger. Construct and maintain area’s game and livestock fences. Perform preventative and corrective maintenance/repairs on buildings, equipment, grounds, signs, watering facilities, roads, etc. Irrigate project lands, acres, adjust water control structures to place water Participate in farming activities for the purpose of growing food crops and enhancing wildlife habitat Culture crops and trees by flood and sprinkle-irrigation Mechanical and chemical weed control Build, place, check and re-fill deer and elk feeders with pellets and hay The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. Qualifications
Working Conditions Outside during inclement weather, long hours, before sunrise and after sunset, on weekends, and uneven work schedule. Regularly required to lift sacks of feed, seed, fertilizer, etc. Routinely operates heavy equipment and dual axle trucks, tractors, chemical sprayers and other equipment. Required to maintain valid first aid and CPR certificates. This position requires occasional use of a firearm to deliver immobilization drugs and projecting nets for wildlife capture, euthanizing injured or sick wildlife, killing or hazing nuisance animals or birds, collecting animals for research or other studies, and protection from dangerous animals in close quarters. This position requires the possession of a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL). On your application, be sure to indicate in the Work Experience section if you have a CDL. If the selected applicant does not possess a CDL, they are required to obtain this license within six months of hire and must retain it as a condition of continued employment in this position. The department will pay for up to $100 toward the cost of the CDL exam and renewal reimbursement. The cost of the physical exam would be covered if the employee is enrolled in PEBB for medical insurance. Pursuant to the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and Federal Highway Administration regulations, candidates must successfully pass an alcohol/controlled substance test before being hired into this position. Additionally, employees required to hold a CDL will be subject to random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up alcohol/controlled substance testing as a condition of employment. This position requires an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on the job use of quads (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, accessible at the following website: www.rideatvoregon.org/. If the selected applicant does not possess this certification, they must obtain it within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment. This position requires the possession of a Public Pesticide Applicator’s License (PPAL). On your application, be sure to indicate in your job description if you have a PPAL. If the selected applicant does not possess a PPAL, they must obtain within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment. This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor. Criminal Records/DMV Check Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration. NOTE: Within three-days of hire, applicants will be required to complete the U.S. Department Homeland Security's I-9 form confirming authorization to work in the United States. ODFW participates in E-Verify. ODFW is not able to support VISA sponsorships. We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience: Minimum Qualifications: An Associate’s degree in Wildlife Technology or Agriculture; OR Eighteen months of experience in the care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming. (Six months of fisheries or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience). A higher level degree in Wildlife Science, Agriculture, or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate’s degree. Requested Skills: • Assessing and maintaining wildlife habitat • Implementing farming and irrigation practices • Operating hand and power tools • Maintaining facilities • Operating and maintaining heavy equipment and electronic or mechanical equipment • Experience using GIS mapping • Broad understanding of hunting regulations • Working with the public • Experience with using Herbicides • Fencing, repair and maintenance • Winter driving during severe conditions The State of Oregon requires all executive branch employees to complete their COVID-19 vaccination series or have an approved exception to the requirement due to a medical condition or sincerely held religious belief.
