The Injury and Violence Prevention Center (IVPC) is a collaborative initiative of the Colorado SPH and the CU School of Medicine. The IVPC drives evidence-based prevention of injuries and violence through research and by providing training, education, and dissemination to community partners and practitioners. The IVPC supports the Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative (FIPI), a program which coordinates, synergizes, and stimulates collaborative approaches to firearm injury prevention. It offers an existing network of researchers, public health professionals, and experts within the firearms community. The FIPI also hosts the Colorado Firearm Safety Coalition, which was established in 2015 and brings together firearms and public health communities.  The FIPI is led by Dr. Emmy Betz, in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the CU School of Medicine; her lab has multiple active grants related to firearm injury prevention.

Under the direction of project principal investigators and managers, this role will be assigned various research assistant/coordination responsibilities supporting Dr. Betz’s grants, FIPI efforts, and grant funded IVPC efforts. The focus of this position’s work will be to advance research grounded in collaborative and inclusive firearm injury prevention efforts in Colorado and nationwide.

This position is ideal for a candidate with strong qualitative research skills and experience, including qualitative data collection and analysis. Additional skills of interest include translational research, policy analysis, and/or evaluation. Job Duties

  • Assisting with all stages of research and evaluation projects, including human subject research studies that involve recruiting and consenting participants
  • Collaborating with funding agency partners and community-based partners to integrate direction and feedback into research methods, instruments, and data collection processes
  • Assisting with qualitative data collection, entry, and cleaning
  • Developing study materials (e.g., survey instruments, qualitative interview and focus group guides, and/or other data collection instruments)
  • Developing and maintaining study databases for data collection, organization, and management
  • Assisting with basic analyses of qualitative data using appropriate software (e.g., Dedoose)
  • Creating reports, data visualizations, and other products for a variety of technical and non-technical audiences
  • Participating in project meetings with study team; and helping with scheduling, coordination, and notetaking
  • Interacting with community members from a wide range of backgrounds and political affiliations, including firearm retailers, ranges, instructors, 2A organizations, and the public health community
  • Promoting and representing IVPC and FIPI at community events
  • Collaborating with faculty investigators and research staff
  • Updating study protocols and accurately documenting internal processes
  • Conducting literature reviews and policy scans
  • Assisting with preparation of progress reports and regulatory documents for funding agencies
  • Assisting in the preparation of manuscripts, presentations, and posters for scientific meetings
  • Completing other duties as necessary for completion of research studies

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in social/behavioral sciences, public health or related field from an accredited institution.
  • One year of professional experience in qualitative data collection and analysis

Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in relevant discipline (e.g., social/behavioral sciences, public health)
  • At least 2 years’ experience with human subject research or related experience
  • At least 1 year experience with injury and violence, firearm injury, translational research, policy analysis, mental health research or evaluation
  • Experience in community-based research
  • Expertise with data collection applications including REDCap and Qualtrics
  • Experience with qualitative analysis software programs (e.g., Dedoose, InVivo)
  • Knowledge of or experience with firearm culture, safety, and/or policy
  • Research coordination experience

Salary and Benefits:

The salary for this 100% full-time position has been established at $54,000-$59,000.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation at the time of posting. The salary for the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, career field, education, and area of expertise.
