Fire Suppression System Technical Review Specialist

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Testing and Inspection and working collaboratively with other University Departments, Fire Suppression System Technical Review Specialist assists with the fire suppression/sprinkler planning and technical reviews for capital renovations and construction projects.  

This position coordinates with construction/project managers and designers from schematic design through project completion providing technical oversight, planning, design and schematic review, commissioning and operationalization for fire suppression systems. 

 

Site Protection is tasked with the operation and management of critical life safety and security systems and infrastructure which indirectly supports all University departments and programs. A primary collaborator is the Office of Capital Projects.

 

The Princeton University campus consists of approximately 12 million gross square feet of space comprised of residential, administrative, athletic, library, dining, classroom, and research space.  Site Protection has a presence across campus, providing services to approximately 200 buildings. There are approximately 200 buildings, 500 acres, 8,300 students, and 8,200 faculty/staff.

 

 



ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and Technical Review – reviews all new fire suppression system technical and schematic design and renovations of existing fire suppression projects verifying that the University’s Design Standards are followed and implemented in accordance with applicable code and regulation.  Must understand sprinkler system piping and environmental elements to perform hydraulic calculations.
  • Planning and Coordination –  attends all required fire suppression project meetings and walkthroughs during construction and/or other related meetings as required
  • Project Site Visits/Inspections – routinely conducts weekly (or at specified frequency set by Supervisor) for each project the individual is providing technical oversite and review for to ensure design and installation accuracy.  Observations shall be communicated to the construction/project manager as well as the Supervisor for Testing and Inspection immediately upon observation. 
  • Commissioning –  oversees and actively participates in the testing and commissioning of each fire suppression system as well as coordinates the appropriate handover of all system related information to the Life Safety Systems work unit within the Site Protection Team.
  • Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully the Fire Suppression Systems Technical Specialist must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required. 

 

  • Education/Experience – ten (10) years’ experience in the field of sprinkler technical review or in a closely related field. With at least five (5) years of project management experience within a commercial/institutional environment or a related field plus two (2) years of experience in inspection, testing and maintenance of water-based fire suppression systems   
  • Knowledge of Fire Code – Must have a working knowledge of the New Jersey Fire Code as it relates to fire suppression systems, with the ability to determine code requirements relative to the University’s fire and life safety systems, must possess knowledge of various NFPA guidelines (such as, but not limited to NFPA 10, 13, 25, 70, 72, 80, 101, and 2000)
  • Communication and Analytical Skills – Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to a diverse audience, and possess a knowledge of appropriate escalation protocols; and analytical skills
  • Customer Service Skills – Understanding of modern customer service theories, practices and methods, and how to apply them
  • Managerial Complexity – Ability to successfully handle multiple tasks at once, and be able to determine appropriate priorities; must be able to make code interpretations  
  • Technical Skills – Must be proficient in the interworking’s of commercial fire alarm and fire suppression systems and related software, the use of business application software; must be familiar with the use of a computerized maintenance-management software program
  • After-Hour Emergency Response – Must be able to respond to after normal business hour emergencies and incidents involving fire suppression systems as needed, and on short notice
  • Driver’s License – Must have a valid driver’s license.

Essential Personnel – Must be able to function in an essential personnel role, which may include an extended on-campus presence during emergencies in which the technical skillset may be of necessity in maintain life safety systems.


Working Conditions - This position works in an office setting, but also out in the field in varying temperatures. The position will require travel throughout the campus from construction site to site conducting field inspections and to visit with construction managers, project managers, contractors and others as necessary.
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate Degree in Fire Science Technology
  • NICET certified in special hazard systems, NICET certified in fire alarm systems, and other related certifications.
