Fire Protection Engineer

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Security & Emergency Services (SES) Division has an opening for a Fire Protection Engineer to join the team.

 

In this exciting role, you will apply your knowledge in the practice of fire inspection and applicable building inspection, support the implementation and maintenance of fire prevention and/or fire protection programs and procedures to minimize personnel injury and/or property damage at the main site and at off-site leased LBNL locations. The incumbent will incorporate fire prevention and fire protection standards to ensure compliance with all Contract 31 and Department of Energy (DOE) fire protection-related orders, policies, and procedures and is in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), California Titles 19 and 24, and other Federal, State, and local agencies. The incumbent will be responsible for the Fire Prevention code enforcement and/or building construction of Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems, including performing plan review. The goal of the Lab’s Fire Protection Program (FPP) is to minimize the potential for occurrence of a fire or related event; fires that cause an unacceptable release of hazardous or radiological material that could impact the health and safety of employees, the public, or the environment; unacceptable interruption of vital LBNL programs as a result of fire and related hazards; property loss from fire exceeding limits established by DOE; and fire damage to mission critical programs. 

 

All members of the Fire Protection and Engineering team have either primary or secondary emergency services duties during any incident or event affecting the safety and security of Lab personnel, property, and/or the environment.  This position is subject to 24/7 recall and assignment on extended duty hours or during nights, weekends, and holidays when such events occur, as a member of the Lab’s Critical Incident Management Group (CIMG).

 

What You Will Do:

• Under leadership of the Fire Marshal and having an understanding and experience in fire prevention, fire protection engineering, plan review, and inspection experience, the incumbent uses professional concepts and Lab objectives to analyze, plan, schedule, and coordinate the implementation of the Fire Protection and Engineering Program. 
• Resolves fire protection and life safety issues in a collaborative, creative, and effective way. 
• Fire Protection Engineering and Code Enforcement:
  • Responsible for the implementation and ensures success of the following programs and activities to include administration of the Hot Work Program, Pre-Incident Plan Program, and collaboration with Facilities and Environment, Health & Safety Divisions.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements the recommendations to reports such as the Baseline Needs Assessment, Facility Assessments (FA), Facility Assessments (FA), and Fire Protection Self-Assessments.
• Building Construction Fire Protection Systems to include:
  • Reviews and analyzes building construction and renovation documents required for new construction or modifications of existing facilities to determine appropriate fire prevention measures and implements solutions as appropriate to ensure safety and compliance.  
  • Responsible for ensuring that all construction activities are performed to the approved plans through inspections and commissioning.  
  • participates in design development meetings to review new construction projects or modifications of existing buildings. 

 

What is Required:

• Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant Engineering program (e.g., Fire Protection, Mechanical) or Physical Sciences program or equivalent in education and experience with a minimum of two (2) years of related fire protection engineering / fire prevention experience, and either (1) licensure as a Fire Protection Engineer in the State of California; or (2) demonstrated coursework and objective efforts to obtain licensure within three years of hire date.
• Experience and working knowledge in the areas of fire prevention and inspection program planning and management, fire alarm and detection systems, building design review for fire and life safety systems, inspection, testing, and maintenance procedures for fire alarm and water-based suppression systems, hot work permits, fire prevention training, and fire response protocols and procedures.
• Ability to successfully interact with both internal and external stakeholders 
• Demonstrated organizational skills to establish priorities and ensure completion of a wide range of projects in a timely manner.
• Incumbent is expected to pursue and achieve training and qualification/certification in appropriate DOE and LBNL required coursework through the LBNL required training program, the State Fire Training program through the Office of the State Fire Marshal, International Code Council, and other sources as required.
• Continuing education to retain active licensure as a Fire Protection Engineer is required, once licensed.

 

 

Desired Qualifications:

• Minimum of five (5) years of related fire protection engineering / fire prevention experience.
• California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector I or II, ICC Fire Inspector II or II, ICC Fire Plans Examiner, ICC Building Plans Examiner, or California State Fire Marshal Plans Examiner.
• Master’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering.
• The Junior Fire Protection Engineer would have or be seeking Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT), or having passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
• The Senior Fire Protection Engineer will be licensed in the United States as a Fire Protection Engineer, and ability to obtain Licensure in the State of California as a Fire Protection Engineer by comity.
• Participation in development committees of recognized Codes and Standards (e.g., NFPA, ICC, UL, etc.).

• This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
• This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
