Job Summary

Under QBI, this Financial Supervisor will perform all managerial finance and administration tasks to support the infrastructure, a portfolio of over $40 million in annual federal funding and $6 million in non-sponsored funding, train and develop the QBI team, and support executive management in their stead. This position will support the QBI Chief Operating Officer and their various projects, and make financial decisions in the absence of the Chief Operating Officer. This position will play a strong role in the development of collaborations, MOUs and relationship building for the institute on the administrative side and as a liaison to the UCSF legal entities. The position will all have direct oversite and approval authority for QBI’s purchasing (BearBuy & P-Card), expense reimbursement (MyExpense), journals and cost-transfers (PeopleSoft) and personnel funding changes (UCPath).

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

QBI is an Organized Research Unit at UCSF that seeks transformative results in biomedicine; QBI supports fundamental quantitative research in the biological sciences. The Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) fosters collaborations across the biomedical and the physical sciences, seeking quantitative methods to address pressing problems in biology and biomedicine. Motivated by problems of human disease, QBI is committed to investigating fundamental biological mechanisms, because ultimately solutions to many diseases have been revealed by unexpected discoveries in the basic sciences.

The Dean’s Office, School of Pharmacy is the main functional arm for administration and operations at-large for the School of Pharmacy.  The School of Pharmacy is a 100M+ organization. The School of Pharmacy operates in various campus locations within San Francisco and in addition, has remote sites across California.  The School comprises of 3 main academic departments (Clinical Pharmacy, Bioengineering and Therapeutics Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Chemistry), 1 operational department that houses several subunits (Web and Communications, Student Curricular, Education, Educational and Informational Services, and Finance and Administration) and 1 Organization Research Unit (ORU) that is QBI.


Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration – Focus in Finance or in a related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in Finance/Finance Administration
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a lead/supervisor/manager.
  • Extensive knowledge of finance policies, practices and systems, budgeting and reporting techniques, accounting and bookkeeping.  Includes MyReports, Bearbuy, MyExpense, People Soft, UCPath Box, and any other campus apps used frequently by Financial Officers
  • Solid understanding of financial and resource planning concepts as well as how to control organizational budgeting.
  • Ability to prepare and present materials to internal and external constituents.
  • Extensive knowledge of human resource policies, practices, and planning.
  • Advanced skills in the use of spreadsheet and database software.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels.
  • Proven ability to deal with changing priorities and direct the work of others accordingly. Ability to multi-task.
  • Demonstrated ability to screen applications, interview candidates, and either make selection decisions or recommend individuals for hire.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Client services oriented; has good listening, communication, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
