Job Description

Candidates interested in a career with a focus on financial and project management are invited to apply to join the Research Advancement team at ASU’s School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy (SEMTE).

Members of the SEMTE Research Advancement team are responsible for providing financial oversight of federal grants and contracts and discretionary accounts while working closely with faculty who are making impactful advances in solving today’s global issues. Individuals who understand the principles of financial practices, possess excellent customer service skills, and value continuous improvement are desired. 

This is a mid-career track position (Level 3 of 6) with opportunities to increase complexity based on job performance, as well as growth into multiple branches of specialization or supervisory tracks.

Essential Duties

  • Analyzes, reconciles, and prepares reports on financial information on sponsored, local and foundation accounts.
  • Forecasts accounts to avoid deficits and provide support to faculty regarding appropriate and allocable use of funds.
  • Facilitates proper handling of financial and payroll transactions, approves transactions within designated limits, reviews charges for compliance with ASU and sponsoring agency/contract conditions and requirements.
  • Provides guidance and assistance in preparing administrative post award documents including at-risks, pre-award costs, budget revisions, and no cost extensions.
  • Responds to inquiries in a timely manner using effective interpersonal communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills and methods as appropriate to address questions and/or concerns.
  • Works with the School and University budget preparation process for non-sponsored accounts.
  • Works under deadlines, manages multiple responsibilities and duties, while navigating interruptions and unclear and/or changing situations. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three (3) years of related experience, OR, seven (7) years of related experience, OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Experience in preparing detailed documents, proposals, reports, and/or related materials and account management.
  • Experience being a problem solver who can take initiative, manage workload effectively and set priorities while being flexible.
  • Experience working independently as well as collaboratively as a member of a team.
  • Skilled at building strong professional relationships through collaboration and influence without authority
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the policies, procedures, and requirements of all applicable regulations governing management of grants and/or contracts for sponsors such as NSF, NIH, DOD, DOE, ONR, AFOSR, AFRL, NASA, and ARO.
  • Knowledge of quality customer service standards and practices. 
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience using ASU systems including Enterprise Research Administration (ERA), Workday for financial, PeopleSoft for human resources, Adaptive Planning/Workday for budgeting.
