As part of the largest college at the University of Michigan, LSA Finance employs more than 90 employees who provide financial and research administration support to over 100 units. LSA
Finance is seeking a finance professional to provide financial and research administration support services to LSA business offices. The Financial Specialist Senior is a key member of the business office serving multiple units. This role requires excellent leadership and interpersonal skills to partner with colleagues at all levels and within multiple University offices.

Flexible Work Arrangements

As part of the University of Michigan's Future Work Initiative and LSA Finance's Flexible Work Arrangements, this position may work on campus or remotely but will require individuals to come to campus as needed to foster intentional collaboration, team building, and connection.
 

This position is responsible for:

Acting as a resource within the department on technical aspects of work. Contributing to the development of others through mentoring opportunities. Providing training to other staff, both new and seasoned. Identifying needs and seeking opportunities to provide ad hoc training either individually or in a group setting.

Mastery of the intricacies of a project lifecycle and all chartfield information (e.g. fund level, programs, etc.). Understanding of LSA and University policies as related to full management of that project grant. Ability to use information to construct accurate and comprehensive analysis and subsequent communication with faculty. Working through and providing solutions to difficult and sometimes complex issues as they arise. Expert knowledge of tools and best practices for PI financial assistance (e.g. internal funding opportunities). Research transactions for compliance and resolve related issues.

Processing transactions utilizing M-Pathways and interfacing with the SSC as needed. Receiving information from department faculty, staff, and administrators to prepare paperwork or process on-line submissions, ensure compliance with LSA and UM policies, track transactions within the M-Pathways to ensure proper payment, and complete timely processing. Ensuring that statement entries are accurate, correctly coded and in compliance with regulations and requirements. Assisting with preparation of financial reports, assisting with review of business office Financial Management & Oversight Reports, and some financial analysis. May participate in projections and monitor spending plans for units as necessary.

Assisting co-workers with problem-solving and decision-making processes, and providing backup support for any overflow work requested by the team or other Business Offices. Exhibiting sound judgment; handling sensitive and confidential information appropriately; demonstrated ability to work under pressure of deadlines and competing priorities; ability to complete tasks on time. Fostering diversity and inclusiveness, including opinion and viewpoint. Continuous and active development of working relationships with the faculty in departments supported. Trusted resource for all budgeting needs and all financial questions. Assisting and possibly taking lead in developing and implementing administrative procedures for continuous improvement. Acting as a mentor to other team members as needed. Helping to foster team cohesiveness and positive morale.

Offering suggestions for enhancements to LSA Fin processes. Identifying appropriate offices for obtaining required information or clarification to policies or processes and understanding the
offices' roles and responsibilities. Is known within the unit as an expert for both LSA and departmental processes relative to financial administration.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required, preferably in a financially related field

Three to five years of experience in finance or accounting is required; candidates must have the ability to develop and implement procedures, prepare reports, and have some financial analysis
experience.

Excellent, demonstrated customer service skills are essential as customer service is core to the mission of LSA Finance. In addition, candidates must have the ability to develop and implement
procedures, prepare reports, and handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately. Well-developed interpersonal skills, the ability to work with diverse groups of customers, ability to mentor others, and demonstrated competence in verbal and written communication are all required. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team and maintain positivity. Mastery of Excel and comfort with changing technology are essential. Must have the ability to work in a team environment and collaborate effectively with co-workers. Identifies ways to improve policies, common practices, and procedures. Candidates will need to attend to detail, exhibit sound judgment, follow work through to completion, and meet high work standards.

Extensive knowledge of University resources, information systems or applications, policies, and procedures. Comprehensive experience using M-Pathways, Business Objects, and Microsoft Office Suite.
