Job Description

The Global Security Initiative, a research and programming unit of ASU Knowledge Enterprise, is seeking a Financial Specialist Senior to assist with financial oversight of sponsored projects, as well as unit-wide business operation functions. These functions include procurement, budget forecasting, account reconciliation, and compliance oversight. Position will serve as a primary financial approver for purchases, travel, and other expenses.

The ideal candidate works well in a fast-paced environment, has the ability to multi-task while maintaining close attention to detail, provides high level customer service to both the university and external community, is a quick learner who is intuitive about business practices and procedures, is comfortable with database systems, and utilizes sound judgement. Ensures the unit is adhering to ASU policies and guidelines.

Salary Range

$50,823 - $63,000 per year, DOE


Essential Duties

  • Works closely with Assistant Director to coordinate financial activities to ensure adherence with unit and university policies, practices, and regulations.
  • Investigates financial discrepancies and works as a liaison between the unit and financial services to reach a solution.
  • Reviews and approves travel requests.
  • Provides sponsored post-award management for assigned unit(s).
  • Reviews account expenditures in accordance with established financial guidelines and policies.
  • Prepares and maintains documentation necessary for audits.
  • Prepares journal entries, general ledger expense transfers, payroll redistributions, and account reconciliations.
  • Prepares budget adjustments and amendments.
  • Reviews requisitions for completeness and accuracy, identify sources, obtain quotes, negotiate price and terms, issue purchase orders.
  • Performs clerical functions including data entry, report preparation, and other related functions.
  • Maintains and audits unit-wide financial documentation and files.
  • Participates in a variety of departmental, unit, and university-wide initiatives and meetings to represent financial interest and ensure integration/collaborative support of unit and university wide interests.
  • Assists with invoicing, independent contractors and award disbursements.
  • Assists with the GRA/GSA hiring process.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to ensure continual efficient operations of department to meet customer service needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three (3) years of related experience, OR, seven (7) years of related experience, OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in workday, ERA, and Microsoft Office. 
  • Experience using Google Drive and other collaborative platforms for scheduling, document sharing, maintaining spreadsheets and forms. 
  • Demonstration of professional communication and writing skills
