Job Summary

The Finance Manager works under the general supervision of the Division Manager to manage the finance and research administration functions of the Division of Palliative Medicine.

The incumbent develops financial management and reporting systems that ensure compliance with UCSF policies and plans short- and long-range financial support to meet divisional goals. The individual manages Division specific financial reporting systems and is expert in using campus wide systems including My Reports, Peoplesoft, UC Path, BearBuy, M Expense, PeopleConnect, and PLUS. The individual provides analysis for both monthly and ad hoc reporting, detailing financial condition and forecasting expenditures in grants, contracts, endowments, operations and clinical activities of the Division.

The position is critical to the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the Division, as the Finance Manager analyzes, monitors, and reports on the overall financial position of the Division. The incumbent serves as the single point of contact to the principal investigators (PIs) for post-award research administration, assists with budget development for proposals, and provides reliable, friendly, and timely teamwork. The incumbent will provide proactive, high-quality, efficient, responsive, and responsible finance support through applying effective interpersonal skills and available technology. This position may also provide staff supervision support when the division manager is away from the office and may oversee staff who are performing finance related activities. 


Department Description

The Division of Palliative Medicine is in the Department of Medicine. Palliative care is specialized medical care for people with serious illness. This type of care is focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family. Launched in 2018, the Division aims to make palliative care routine at UCSF Health so that every patient with a serious illness and their family has access to high quality palliative care. The various palliative care programs at UCSF that now make up the Division have been nationally and internationally recognized as leaders in clinical innovation, education, research, and training since 2000.

The Division has financial and administrative relationships with the Department of Medicine and UCSF Health and runs 5 clinical services in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The Division helps advance the clinical, research, and educational missions of the University. It administers local, regional, and national programs aimed at defining and promoting high quality palliative care and supporting the ongoing education and development of individual clinicians and palliative care teams.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, business or related area and three or more years of relevant experience and / or equivalent experience / training in a financial management.
  • Ability to independently gather required information to organize, and perform financial analysis assignments.
  • Proven ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
  • Proven ability using spreadsheet and database software for complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
  • Proven interpersonal skills with peers throughout the organization; strong service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. Proven ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high-volume environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to function as a member of a team.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Ability to manage significant volume of transactions.
  • Ability to perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
  • Understand general fund accounting, purchasing, and budgeting, financial projection, and business planning concepts.
  • Excellent computer skills and facility with using MS Excel (sorting, pivot tables, filtering, basic formulas)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous working experience in an academic environment
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel
  • Prior experience working with MyReports, PeopleSoft Journals, UC Path, MyExpense, and BearBuy.
  • Prior experience in an academic environment.
  • Thorough understanding of research administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc.
  • Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.
