Position Focus:

Reporting to the Senior Financial Compliance Analyst, Analytics, Controller’s Office, this position will play a pivotal role in transforming raw financial data into actionable insights that drive informed decision-making and optimize our business strategies. This will include monitoring financial activity, both through the use of established dashboards as well as through less structured data mining, to identify outliers, trends or other anomalies and perform procedures to investigate such findings. This position will also design, develop and implement advanced analytical models, algorithms and visualizations to uncover key insights, trends, and patterns within the data.  This role will conduct additional ad-hoc data analysis, including extracting/consolidating data, to mitigate risks and identify potential compliance issues. This role is technical in nature and requires expertise in using predictive modeling and machine learning techniques to deliver valuable insights and relationships into the financial data.  This role will also collaborate with management and various University stakeholders to provide insights that support the central finance monitoring program. This position may perform other special projects as required.


Essential Duties

Develop and execute new and/or highly complex algorithms and statistical predictive models and determine analytical approaches and modeling techniques to evaluate potential future outcomes. Establish analytical rigor and statistical methods to analyze large amount of data, using advanced statistical techniques and mathematical analyses.  Manage analytical projects from data exploration, model building, performance evaluation, through implementation. Develop work plans and monitor progress and project timelines. Document coding and changes to work plans using established work group methods in GitHub. Interact with a multidisciplinary team of internal and external peers to regularly, effectively, and openly communicate progress and outcomes of planned work. Attend weekly team meetings to discuss team and project-related activities, issues, change, communications, and updates.


Required Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in computer science, applied/computational mathematics, engineering, biostatistics, statistics, or a quantitative field such as astronomy or geology, economics, health policy, health services research, public policy, or a related field and two years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Exceptional technical skills using tools such as PowerBI, Advanced Excel (pivot tables, vlookups, macros, index match, data mining) and programming languages(Python, SQL, R) to extract, transform and analyze complex data sets.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Experience with statistical analysis, risk analysis, regression analysis and fraud detection leveraging algorithms and machine learning (Artificial Intelligence) techniques.  Ability to work with large structured and unstructured datasets.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to adapt communication style to address the needs of individuals at all levels throughout the University. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Strong analytical skills to identify trends or outliers. Well-developed problem-solving skills, an intellectual curiosity and inquisitive mindset.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to work independently, multitask, use good judgment.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

BA in Data Analytics, Statistics, Computer Science, IT, or related field. Four plus years experience in data science, financial data management + analysis/equivalent combination of education and experience. Background in data analysis with diverse set of platforms i.e. Python/R, knowledge of advanced analytic approaches. Experience w/ data collection and coordinating efforts of multiple groups.
