Department Description

The School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) has six academic departments, a teaching hospital, 16 centers/institutes and four graduate groups. The SVM is the #1 ranked veterinary school in the nation. The SVM has 187 active Senate faculty, 59 Federation faculty, 600 DVM students, 20 MPVM students, 134 graduate students, 102 residents and 1,037 staff. The school has a $290M annual budget, a $285M endowment, and has multiple construction projects in the planning or construction stage, totaling approximately $550 million.



Job Summary

Working under the general supervision of the School’s Budget Director, provides high level analytical and problem-solving support to the Dean’s Office, departments, centers/labs/institutes, and the VM teaching hospital within the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) for matters concerning financial processes and management, internal controls, financial research and reporting, and training/consulting involving significant complexity. Operate with a high degree of independence and autonomy on a day-to-day basis.

Serve as the Dean’s office financial liaison to the academic departments, centers, labs, institutes, and the VM teaching hospital to ensure financial processes, tracking, management, analysis, and reporting are consistent school wide. Provides high level fiscal, analytical, administrative and policy/ procedure support to the Executive Assistant Dean, Chief Administrative Officers and Center and Institute Managers for schoolwide revenues of $220M (excluding $70M in extramural funds) with multiple funding sources including general funds, federal funds, gifts, endowments, self-supporting funds, ICR funds, reserve funds, professional student fees, and course material fees. Responsible for complex financial research and training/ consulting to steward the school’s $290M budget.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in finance, economics, or related field.

·       Strong financial and business management skills and experience to perform extensive in-depth budgetary and financial analyses as well as document such activities.

·       Demonstrated, high-level skills and experience using spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, database, email and web-based software and on-line financial and payroll/personnel systems.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Critical thinking and analytical skills to independently anticipate/identify problems, perform thoughtful, detailed research to resolve such problems, and propose creative, logical solutions.

·       Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles with diverse fund restrictions and fund accounting. Experience developing internal control structures.

·       Strong mathematical skills to accurately calculate, manipulate, and evaluate large volumes of data related to budgetary and financial activities. Demonstrated ability to develop management tools and reports using financial data.

·       Strong oral, written and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and professionally with a diverse group of people in order to clarify complex technical, conceptual and policy issues and help address questions/resolve problems. Excellent attention to detail in reviewing, compiling, analyzing, and presenting data and in composing written communications, with focus on accuracy, spelling, grammar, consistency of format and professionalism.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Experience working in a university setting. Knowledge of current UC and campus standard business policies and practices, including budget, accounting, financial administration, extramural activities, student financial aid) and systems (e.g., Oracle financial systems). Ability to learn new systems as required.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Demonstrated experience with a variety of fund sources and their associated restrictions, including contracts and grants, State general funds, self- supporting funds, tuition and professional fees, and clinical income.
