Position Overview

The Financial Analyst will interpret financial policies and procedures for implementation, execution, and auditing purposes for both the School of Professional Studies (SPS) and the Edwards Campus (KUEC). This position will support academic program leaders and administrative managers by providing variance analysis of spending and guidance, as well as training for the management of individual program and departmental budgets. The position will also work with the Assistant Vice Provost and SSC personnel to initiate financial changes, as appropriate. The Financial Analyst will conduct statistical analysis and modeling of financial data, in order to provide leadership with tools to make strategic decisions regarding current and future administrative spending, and current and future academic program growth. This position may supervise staff and students. The Financial Analyst supports the educational needs of Johnson County Education Research Triangle (JCERT) programs, funded through a 1/8 of a cent sales tax within Johnson County. Specific percentages of effort for JCERT are determined each year.

Job Description

80% - Financial Analysis and Management

  • Interpret financial policies and procedures for implementation, execution, and auditing purposes for the Edwards Campus and the School of Professional Studies.
  • Perform complex technical analysis and financial reporting for varied and complex sources of funding, including but not limited to:
    • Analysis for grant and JCERT payroll allocations.
    • Grant financial management, including monitoring expenses and ensuring proper funding.
    • Assisting with grant and JCERT effort reporting, when appropriate.
    • Generating unit-specific financial reports and models for Program Directors and Managers, utilizing various funding sources, including generated income, state allocations, tax revenue, grants, endowment, and tuition.
    • Performing ad-hoc analysis and reports for campus leadership, which may include pricing and risk models, revenue share analysis, expense and revenue trends and multi-year projections, and other projects.
  • Research and prepare financial analyses with explanations to non-fiscal staff and faculty.
    • Assist staff with resolving program-related financial questions, which may include policy research, communicating with central offices and coordinating responses to internal and external clients/customers.
    • Perform variance analysis and present findings to leadership.
  • Initiate financial changes as directed to ensure accounting principles are followed.
  • Develop training materials and assist leadership with developing a strategic model for financial operations.
  • Prepare financial forecasts and reports from the budget, accounting, and payroll systems.
    • Update Edwards Campus academic cost sheets and innovate improvements to related processes and tools.
    • Prepare annual academic call for budgets documentation and compile overall budget requests.
    • Maintain financial records for KUEC’s portfolio of events, including marketing and other accounts.  Identify discrepancies or errors and notify appropriate staff.
    • Audit financial reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • May provide leadership/guidance with development, design, or interpretation of financial information systems and/or business processes.
    • Interprets campus administration’s reporting requirements to create customized reports and dashboards in the University’s financial reporting systems.
  • Manage accounts receivable for Events, including tracking outstanding receivables, generating invoices, submitting payments, and collecting on outstanding accounts. 
    • Receipt payments, take incoming calls and messages regarding customer accounts, cancel invoices, and make adjustments as necessary, reconcile A/R balances, and run month-end reports.
  • Manage accounts payable for Edwards Campus and SPS
    • Approve purchasing requests, providing appropriate funding information, and ensuring costs are allowable.
    • Liaise with Shared Service Center to ensure proper and timely payments.
15% - Other Analytical and Management Duties
  • Other activities/duties may involve serving on various committees and working in individual and team settings to accomplish overall financial goals.
  • May include occasional on-site travel to both in-state and out-of-state professional development opportunities.
  • Adhere to University of Kansas and State of Kansas policies and procedures.

5% - Other Duties as Assigned
  • May supervise student employees
  • Work towards continuous improvement on business procedures and tasks.  Provide feedback on and suggest changes or updates to departmental policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of related experience OR High School diploma and 5 years of related experience.
  • Excellent communication skills as evident in application materials and interview process.
  • Two years of experience using spreadsheet software.
  • Experience with database management.
  • One year of customer service experience.

  • Master’s degree and 3 years of related experience
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience working in a compliance-driven organization and experience handling confidential information.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, team environment.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, including students, faculty, administrators, and professional groups.
  • Experience or prior knowledge of University of Kansas policies and procedures.
