Job Summary

Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Contacts are both internal and external to the department.

As a key member of the accounting and operations team within the School of Medicine (SOM) Dean’s Office, Financial Affairs Unit (FAU), the Financial Analyst III is tasked to perform high level data analysis, data validation, reconciliation, and review and approval functions.

As a lead financial analyst, he/she is responsible for providing financial support to the Dean’s Office Units (7 Medical Education units and 6 Administrative units).  Support duties include reviewing and advising on financial transactions, being the procurement and expense reimbursement approver, submitting payroll funding entries, completing trend and variance analysis, chartstring and speedtype management, commitments management, deficit and fund management, as well as all other duties that involve the maintenance of financial integrity. The analyst is heavily involved in and takes on a lead role in the Dean’s Office fiscal year-end close and fiscal year opening processes and functions.

In addition, the analyst is responsible for coordinating and administering school-wide financial transactions, which includes the 415(m) restoration plan, integrated funding model (IFM), school level holding activities, as well as auxiliary programs.  The analyst also takes on a major role in performing data validation for key Dean’s Office presentations and reports that ensures the accuracy of data published and widely shared.

The analyst works closely with unit managers and staff, the FAU’s budget team, SOM departments, and central campus offices. The analyst has to exhibit sound judgment, skillfully balance business demands, have the ability to resolve a wide range of issues, and establish excellent working relationships with colleagues, business partners, stakeholders, and leadership.

Department Description

The UCSF School of Medicine is a $3B enterprise and the Financial Affairs office is the chief administration unit. The Financial Affairs office oversees, directs, coordinates, and manages all School of Medicine funds, and all clinical enterprise-related funds flow and transactions. The office serves as the school’s control point for resource planning, finance, accounting and compliance, reporting, and decision support. It also establishes School-wide fiscal policies, processes, and financial reporting, and manages the Dean’s Office budget, reporting, and accounting functions. The office is responsible for the fiscal oversight of 40+ academic departments, organized research units, and programs within the school, and the management of School-wide financial planning, analysis, and reporting process. The mission of the Financial Affairs office is to promote and provide financial expertise, efficient tools and services, responsible fiscal stewardship, and meaningful reporting and analytics, and to be a strategic partner to the leadership of UCSF’s four missions: education, healthcare, public service, and research.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 3+ years of directly relevant experience.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.        
  • Thorough knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems.
  • Proven interpersonal skills with peers throughout the organization; strong service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. Proven ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment.
  • Ability to independently gather required information to organize, and perform financial analysis assignments.
  • Proven ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
  • Proven ability using spreadsheet and database software for complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to function as a member of a team.
