Summary:

We are looking for a Financial Analyst to join our growing Grants and DEI Business Management team. In this role, you will provide vital support for the execution of financial processes and analyses. You will be integral to forecasting, budgeting and long-range planning for the HHMI grants programs and HHMI’s scientific initiatives related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) for the Center for the Advancement of Science Leadership and Culture. In addition, you will support select activities connected to the HHMI Investigator Program.

Reporting to the Grants Finance Manager, you will summarize financial information, analyze trends, and develop monthly and quarterly reports. You will also make recommendations and provide independent, substantive support including the preparation of presentations to management. You will explain and synthesize concepts and data in a written format for audiences both within the finance team and beyond. As a trusted partner, you will aid budget area heads and cost center managers in a financial capacity and serve as our subject matter expert supporting HHMI’s financial, grantmaking, and lease accounting systems.

What you’ll do:

  • Develop, coordinate, and analyze budgets for HHMI’s Grants and DEI programs, including meeting with budget area heads and cost center managers to assist in developing their zero-based budgets. Assist in consolidation of budgets for overall presentation to management. Reconcile the annual budget upload in Workday and Cognos.

  • Summarize financial information for monthly, quarterly, year-end and ad hoc management presentations including results on actuals and projections. Analyze expenditures. Recommend forecast adjustments and prepare variance analysis.

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of long-range financial planning models for the Grants and DEI programs and facilitate the incorporation of those into the Science long range plan.

  • Be a leader in the initiation of awards, to include cost center creation and management, role assignment, and access control. Quarterly reconcile grant program approvals, budgets, and payment activity. Liaise with assigned grantees to obtain timely financial reporting, provide feedback, and produce consolidated management reports.

  • Contribute to the monthly and year-end financial close process by preparing correcting journal adjustments, payroll adjustments and budget transfers.

  • Manage data and payments related to the laboratory space occupied by HHMI Investigators at host sites. Edit and ensure data integrity across parallel systems. Coordinate annual and ad-hoc occupancy correspondence.

  • Coordinate capital asset donations, disposals, and transfers for Investigator program.

  • Become an expert in HHMI’s grants management system, Pathway. Maintain and test Workday and Cognos financial reports. Provide training and assistance as needed to assigned users. Participate in the implementation or upgrade of financial and budgeting systems. Document and maintain business processes and write job aids as needed.

  • Build strong relationships with assigned budget owners to ensure collaborative efforts in preparation of budgets and forecasts. Serve as a resource to the budget owners and as the subject matter authority on grants management, reporting, budgets, actual expenses/revenues and causes for variances.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance or a combination of education and related experience is required.

  • Minimum five years of experience in budget planning and financial analysis

  • Experience with grant management preferably within a nonprofit, academic, or scientific setting.

  • Proficiency in data modeling and spreadsheet analysis is required.

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Adobe, Workday, Tableau and Cognos Café or similar systems is preferred. Experience with grants management software a plus.

  • Ability to prepare and present financial, technical, and other types of information orally and in writing to variety of partners.

  • Ability to prepare, review and verify analyses and documentation for accuracy.

  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple competing priorities, meet, and anticipate frequent deadlines in a timely manner.

  • Ability to adjust flexibly to changing priorities and still operate effectively in a fluid environment.

  • Ability to take initiative, be creative and proactive, think ‘out of the box’ to find innovative solutions.

  • Excellent independent judgment and decision-making skills consistently demonstrating discretion, tact, and diplomacy.

  • Ability to effectively interact with people across all levels of the organization and provide strong customer service within and outside the Institute.

Compensation Range

$77,436.80 (minimum) - $96,796.00 (midpoint) - $125,834.80 (maximum)

Annual

HHMI’s salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
