Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Director of Compliance/R2T4 in the office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services, this position is responsible for processing adjustments to student financial aid for students who have withdrawn.  This process is called calculating the Return of Title IV Aid, which is defined by federal regulations and is time-sensitive with federal deadlines.  Requiring advanced attention to detail, accountant conducts calculation in accordance with federal financial aid regulations.

Salary Range

$45,000 per year


Essential Duties

  • Claim and process files in order of oldest file first in order to meet federal deadline.
  • Research a student’s enrollment history in PeopleSoft to determine data needed to calculate the Return of Title IV aid.
  • Calculate the amount of aid earned and unearned based on a student’s enrollment.
  • Adjust the student’s financial aid based on the results of the calculation and return unearned funds to the Department of Education.
  • Document transactions in the financial aid system.
  • Notify students of changes to their financial aid, as a result of their withdrawal.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business or Public Administration, Humanities or other related field preferred AND one year of experience in financial aid student counseling; OR, five years of experience in financial aid, student counseling or directly related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved. 


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience and knowledge of federal financial aid.
  • Experience with federal financial aid processing.
  • Experience processing Return of Title IV funds.
  • Experience performing detailed numerical computations.
  • Experience using automated financial aid systems (i.e., PeopleSoft).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Access).

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse, required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.  Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.  Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.  Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

Financial Aid and Scholarship Services is one of several departments comprising Academic Enterprise Enrollment which utilizes a variety of strategies to enroll and support a diverse student population representative of Arizona State University's vision.  The Financial Aid and Scholarship Services unit strives to provide excellent customer service with the goal to make each student's application for financial aid a simple and affordable process.  Each staff member is committed to helping a student finance their education by effectively utilizing scholarships, grants, work-study and loans.  The unit provides tools to help determine the cost of attending ASU, including a scholarship portal to search for available scholarships.  The department also provides resources for student to use to budget their money and a student employment unit which processes department requests for student workers.
