Berkeley Lab’s Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO ) has 2 openings for student assistants within varying business departments in the Division. This internship program is geared toward undergraduate students entering their junior or senior year. 

 

The Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO) provides high-value financial and procurement and property stewardship in support of the Lab's research initiatives. OCFO Division services include: accounts payable, budgeting, business systems, conference services, general accounting, payroll, employee travel, and strategic solutions that contribute to the Lab’s scientific mission. The Division manages a broad range of financial activities, including the planning and implementation of the Lab’s fiscal matters and its approximately $1.2 billion annual budget.

  • This position has an anticipated start date of June 3, 2024.

  • Position: This is a part time, non-exempt from overtime pay (hourly paid), 12 week Student appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must be enrolled in a full time undergraduate academic program to qualify for this position.
  • Hours: This position will operate up to 40 hours per week during the summer and academic breaks. 10-20 hours per week during the academic school year (September-May) Hours/Days of the week are flexible however hours worked must be within standard business hours (M-F 8am to 5pm).
  • Location: This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site 2+ days a week at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
  • Transportation: Berkeley Lab Shuttles are available at no cost. Onite parking is not available.
  • Salary: Salary for this position is predetermined based on student step rates.
    • Undergrad Year 1 (Freshman) = $18.07 hourly
    • Undergrad Year 2-3 (Sophomore & Junior) = $19.91 hourly
    • Undergrad Year 4 (Senior) = $23.42 hourly

What You Will Learn:

The student intern will rotate work in one or more of the following areas within the OCFO: 

  • Controllers Office - Accounting (General/Corporate), Compliance and Audit, Procure to Pay business cycle (AP),Payroll, Business Systems finance integration,Travel/Conference Services disbursements.
  • Procurement and Property Management - Policy, eCommerce, Subcontracting, Purchase Card (PCard) transactions, and Asset Management.
  • A final Capstone project will be included in the internship experience.

 

 

What You Will Do: 

  • Prepare presentations and reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support strategic initiatives.
  • Participate in team meetings and brainstorming sessions to contribute fresh ideas and perspectives.
  • Assisting with the preparation of financial reporting using PeopleSoft or other accounting software.
  • Participate in disbursement audits.
  • Support reconciliation analysis.
  • Assist in contract close-outs.
  • Support audit preparation and planning.
  • Understand Internal Control structure and evaluation. 
  • Support compliance and financial self-assessments.
  • Learn about business system reports.
  • Assist in report writing.
  • Learn about project budgeting trending analysis.
  • Participate in Costing and General ledger account reconciliation.
  • Purchasing goods and services using PCard and subcontracting methodology.

 

What is Required:

  • Candidates must be majoring in an undergraduate program, enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university. Proof of enrollment is required. 
  • Candidates must commit to participate for the full duration of the program
  • The ideal candidate must have completed at least their second year of college and have maintained an overall GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Individuals must possess hands-on knowledge of Google and Microsoft Suite.

Preferred Majors, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Undergraduate majoring in Business Administration, Finance, Computer Sciences, Math, Data Science, Supply Chain, Economics or Accounting.
  • Demonstrated Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
  • Ability to perform basic web-based computer functions.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Passion for learning and a desire to grow in the field of finance.
