Description
We are seeking a dynamic individual to hold a leadership role in an exciting long-term research and field ecology study operational in Northern Botswana. The program is being conducted collaboratively between Virginia Tech (http://fishwild.vt.edu/faculty/alexander.htm) and a local NGO, CARACAL (www.caracal.info). A primary focus of this work is on infectious disease transmission at the human-wildlife interface. The position also involves a focus on local capacity development and training as well as contributing to facility management and care of the animal collection. Position Summary Under the guidance of the project PI (Virginia Tech) and CARACAL CEO, the wildlife veterinarian will provide coordination and support for veterinary activities and research projects conducted as part of a larger program investigating ecosystem health in Northern Botswana. The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in the production of peer-reviewed publications. Fieldwork will include radio-tracking of banded mongoose and other species, behavioral studies, environmental sampling, and other field research activities as well as management of supporting laboratory studies and data collection and curation workflows. Other activities will include veterinary care of a small captive wildlife collection and occasional treatment of injured and orphaned animals. Qualifications
Qualifications • Veterinary degree • Experience in small or large animal medicine with wildlife, field research, and/or laboratory experience is an added advantage, • Able to undertake physically demanding work and tolerance for high temperatures, • Experience working outdoors, • Must be able to adapt to unforeseen circumstances with initiative and due care, • Ability to work alone – strong initiative and independence, must be able to work unsupervised on a day to day basis, • Ability to interact, train, and manage local staff and students visiting the facility from the USA or Botswana, • Regional experience desirable, • Driver’s license with experience in off-road vehicle use. Timeframe: Period of appointment: 12 months. Contract renewable based on performance. We will hire as soon as a suitable candidate is identified.
