The organizing principle of the Integrative Oceanography Division (IOD) resides in a shared commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary science. "Integrative" denotes our philosophy that multiple approaches are important in creating a better understanding of the ocean system. We take great pride in our membership of physical, biological, chemical and geological oceanographers, climate and information scientists, data and information managers, engineers, technicians, education specialists, administrative and management professionals. IOD distinguishes itself as scientific home for researchers working at the boundaries of traditional academic spheres, and generating growing programs in the integration of research with informatics as well as with education and public outreach. From pelagic to benthic ecology, shoreline to open ocean dynamics, data to information systems, our research encompasses field work, laboratory experimentation and computer modeling to acquire, integrate, synthesize and understand diverse data sets to elucidate the underlying dynamics of complex, multidimensional ocean systems.

Under the general direction of senior researchers, provides scientific guidance and assistance with implementation, design and monitoring of a field site / study. The Field Researcher 3 will be part of coastal oceanographic research programs within Integrative Oceanography Division, working with beach monitoring systems and nearshore oceanographic data. Supports field research projects and participates in preparation and execution of a variety of surveys. Works with oceanographic sensors and systems, configuring, preparing, deploying and proactively planning and solving potential issues. Prepares and performs multibeam acoustic bathymetry research surveys from small boats, verifying boats are compliant with Coast Guard safety requirements. Responsible for the multibeam survey equipment and software upkeep. Processes multibeam survey research data, performs quality control, data management, and disseminates to PIs, recommending improvements in process, design, procedures, and operating equipment. Prepares, deploys and operates systems utilizing ATVs, UTVs, waverunners, and GNSS electronics. Performs installation, maintenance and recovery of oceanographic instrumentation at field sites. Performs LIDAR surveys at field sites. Pilots UAVs with cameras and/or LIDAR to collect survey research at field sites. Processes UAV and LIDAR data, records results, and performs quality control.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Master's degree preferred.

  • A valid California Driver's License. Safe driving skills.

  • Current FAA Remote Pilot License.

  • Experience operating ATVs and UTVs safely.

  • Thorough knowledge of safety, legal, cultural and regulatory requirements relative to field research responsibility.

  • Demonstrated ability to safely perform SCUBA diving. Ability to obtain and maintain SIO research diver certification to a depth of 60'.

  • Experience collecting and processing Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) survey data.

  • Demonstrated experience collecting and processing UAV survey data.

  • Demonstrated experience operating small boats and wave runners in coastal waters, especially under adverse conditions. Ability to operate said vehicles responsibly and in a safe manner. Experience judging ocean and weather conditions for field work safety.

  • Demonstrated experience collecting and processing both single and multibeam acoustic bathymetry survey data.

  • Machine shop skills with the mill, lathe, drill press, grinders, and saws. Demonstrated experience with large and hand tools and how to use them safely.

  • Thorough knowledge of research discipline, principles, concepts, analysis and / or operations being conducted at field / remote sites. Strong research and analytical skills.

  • Thorough knowledge of local customs and operations at field / remote sites.

  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with remote research partners.

  • Proven ability to work independently and with a team, and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Demonstrated ability to use independent judgment and make responsible and safety-conscious decisions in the field.

  • Strong attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Strong time management and follow up skills. Excellent organizational skills including the ability to keep clear and accurate records, organize a varied workload, proven ability to prioritize and schedule experiments and duties to maximize efficiency.

  • Proven ability to work in ambiguous conditions and take relevant responsible action as required.

  • Strong communication skills with research partners and project team members. Strong oral communication skills presenting information to audiences of various backgrounds. Strong written communication skills to present information in reports.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills including thoughtfulness, diplomacy, and flexibility with students, staff, faculty, collaborators, stakeholders, communities, and partners from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends required.

  • This position is subject to a DMV check for driving record.

  • Ability to maintain SIO research diver certification of 60'.

  • Must be willing to work in the surfzone and at remote field sites for up to four (4) weeks at a time, several times per year.

  • Ability to pass ATV Safety Institute Rider course.

  • Position will involve physical labor for both field work and everyday tasks.

  • Must be U.S Citizen to operate UAVs at UCSD.

  • Job offer is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.


  • Pay Transparency Act

    Annual Full Pay Range: $61,800 - $108,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

    Hourly Equivalent: $29.60 - $51.72

    Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
