About the Department
The 900+ positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2, 240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.
The Landscape Maintenance & Operations unit provides campus wide programs and services and support to include landscape construction and maintenance, comprehensive waste and recycling programs and services. Revenue supported programs and services are provided to Transportation, Housing, Dining, Athletics, Campus Recreation and individual colleges and departments.
Essential Job Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to perform needed maintenance for North Carolina State University’s urban forest as a crew member. Horticultural Specialist-Field Arborist are professionals who specialize in tree care and in particular the proactive maintenance of trees on campus. They have the expertise and knowledge necessary to safely perform sound arboricultural practices in order to remove trees and limbs without causing damage to surrounding structures or property. Horticultural Specialist-Field Arborist can assess the tree and determine the best course of action, taking into account the size and condition of the tree, the surrounding landscape, and any obstacles that may be present. 
Position is devoted to providing the physical inputs needed to maintain NCSU’s tree assets for the benefit of the community and the trees themselves. This is accomplished by working collaboratively within a team in the pruning and removing of limbs, and when necessary, trees throughout campus. Position will perform proper pruning techniques in order to provide overall structure and composition of the tree canopy. Position will identify dead, dying and diseased tree limbs and remove as necessary. Position will also identify any potential hazards that may be present, such as power lines, and take steps to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the removal process.
  • Duties include working aloft (operating aerial lifts and climbing), running ropes, saws, and lowering devices, and working from the ground, (operating tools and equipment) in the loading, hauling and disposing of debris, grinding stumps, chipping brush, work site cleanup, and providing labor and professional inputs on other tree-related service requests as needed.
  • Operates equipment related to tree work, including but not limited to: brush chipper, stump grinder, bucket truck, dump, truck, grapple truck, skid steer, blower, chainsaw, pole saw, rope, rope brake, lowering devices, and other tools and equipment as necessary.
  • Supports proper care and custody of equipment and tools by conducting vehicle and equipment pre-trip inspections; cleaning components; monitoring and replenishing fluids; performing basic corrective repairs.
  • Preventative Maintenance of equipment and tools will include chainsaw sharpening, cleaning air filters, checking fluid levels and applying lubricants, and inspection and maintenance on rope and rigging components to include lowering devices, blocks and slings.
  • Safely performs all work zone traffic control duties including setting up barricades, traffic cones and signs; flagging traffic for stationary and moving work zones.
  • Safely performs all loading, hauling, delivery and off-loading of equipment, trees and tree debris, wood chips, soil, and materials.
  • Physical ability to withstand adverse weather and critical role requirement. Horticultural Specialist-Field Arborist will work outdoors for 8 hours a day and will be exposed to a wide range of temperatures and environmental conditions – sun, wind, rain, and snow.
Other Responsibilities
  • Field Arborist will use the following: Aerial lifts, chipper, chipper truck hauling equipment, utility vehicle, pickup truck, stump grinder, chain saw, pole saw, hand saw, pruner, skid steer, personal protective equipment, blower, fertilizer, pesticides.
  • Experience in landscaping grounds maintenance and performing tree maintenance using trade tools, machinery, and equipment, etc.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively written and verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
  • Position serves in a critical role and is essential to the operations of the University. May be required to work during adverse weather conditions and work even if the University closes. Aid in snow removal as directed by supervisors.
  • Physical ability to withstand adverse weather and critical role requirement.
  • Employee will work outdoors for 8 hours a day and more during a weather event.
  • Employee will be exposed to nature’s elements – sun, wind, rain, and snow, temperature extremes.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
 
Necessary Special Qualifications: North Carolina Pesticide License may be required and can be obtained within six months of employment; North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License may be required.

  • Physical ability to withstand adverse weather and critical role requirement.
  • Employee will work outdoors for 8 hours a day and more during a weather event. Employee will be exposed to nature’s elements – sun, wind, rain, and snow, temperature extremes.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively written and verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds frequently and up to 90 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in tree work and tree care.
  • Experience working with chainsaws, aerial lifts, brush chipper, stump grinders, blowers, driving a truck and trailer, general tree and landscape maintenance.
  • EHAP certified (Electrical Hazard Awareness Program).
  • Ability to operate standard transmission.
Required License or Certification
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • North Carolina Driver’s license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
  • Possess a CDL Class B license or ability to obtain CDL Class B license within one year after hire.
  • ISA certified arborist or ability to obtain within one year.
  • North Carolina Pesticide License may be required and can be obtained with one year of employment.
