FELLOWSHIP

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!
Overview:

The Mathematics in Computation Section at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites outstanding candidates to apply for the Alston S. Householder Fellowship in mathematics and scientific computing. This prestigious Fellowship offers an excellent opportunity to conduct exceptional and innovative research in mathematics, scientific computing, and statistics, for applications with scientific and national priority. ORNL’s mathematics research efforts provide fundamental mathematical methods and algorithms needed to model complex physical, chemical, and biological systems. ORNL’s computational science research efforts enable scientists to efficiently implement these models at the extreme scale of computing and to store, manage, analyze, and visualize the massive amounts of data that result. ORNL’s statistics research provides techniques to link the data producers, e.g., supercomputers and large experimental facilities, with the data consumers, i.e., scientists who need the data.

The Fellowship honors Dr. Alston S. Householder and recognizes his seminal research contributions to the fields of numerical analysis and scientific computing. Dr. Householder headed ORNL’s Mathematics Section and Mathematics Panel, which are today the Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSMD). Each Householder Fellowship appointment is funded for a two-year appointment for recipients with proven exceptional academic records and achievements, along with formal mentorship and guidance designed to facilitate successful integration and alignment of their research activities within DOE programs. Recipients are expected to conduct research of the highest quality and impact, elevate the reputation of the Laboratory, and become scientific leaders. The fellowship offers collaborative research opportunities with highly motivated researchers in active programs at ORNL, a highly competitive salary, moving expenses, and a generous professional travel allowance.

The selected individual will be mentored by a senior mathematician and is encouraged to build a research program leveraging an outstanding mathematics team, access to advanced computer architectures and ORNL’s Leadership Class Computing Facility, including SUMMIT and FRONTIER HPCs, with opportunities to facilitate technology transfer from the laboratory research environment to industry.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Contribute research to one (or more) of ORNL’s principal areas of research in mathematics and computer science.

• Collaborate with a highly diverse, multidisciplinary team.

• Report research results in open literature journals, technical reports, and at relevant conferences.

Required Qualifications:

• Each applicant must be the recipient of an earned doctorate in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computational Science, or related field and, with rare exceptions, must be no more than four years beyond the doctorate.

• Applicants should not have previously served more than one postdoctoral appointment.

• The successful applicant with have demonstrated expertise in one or more than one area of relevance to the ORNL’s mathematics and computer science programs.

Principal research areas include:

• Computational and applied mathematics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the mathematics of data, discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science, statistics and probability, optimization.

• The ability to effectively communicate his/her research in written and oral form, to an audience of experts and non-experts.

How to apply:

Qualified applicants may apply at www.jobs.ornl.gov For full consideration please submit complete application by Nov 15. The posting will remain active until December 10th.
