Position Overview
This position manages and operates the entire feed mill operation under the direct supervision of the Associate Manger of the Dairy/Feed Mill Unit. The Feed Mill Supervisor provides diets for livestock in research, extension and teaching programs; maintains all feed handling, processing and mixing equipment, and feed facilities such as the mix room, elevator legs, hay barn and feeding equipment. The Feed Mill Supervisor prepares feed and feed equipment requisitions, handles computerized inventory and billing system, determine feed needs, and manages quality control on products received. The Feed Mill Supervisor is responsible for maintenance of the feed mill, formulating diets and fabricating feed for teaching, extension and research purposes. The Feed Mill Supervisor participates as guest lecturer in course labs. The supervisor trains and supervises part-time temporary employees to mix experimental rations for the Beef/Sheep, Dairy, Veterinary Science and USDA units. The supervisor assures livestock are fed daily from mixer-feed equipment. The supervisor works directly with faculty and herdsmen in relation to ration formulation. This position works closely with the Palouse Research, Extension and Education Center (PREEC) Land Manager on production farm-raised hay and straw, and closely with the Livestock and Feed Mill General Manager on the purchased and harvest of hay and straw. The supervisor ensures all livestock feeds are stored correctly and in proper locations; keeps the Feed Mill and surrounding area safe, clean and orderly. The Feed Mill Supervisor will occasionally be asked to provide management relief at the PREEC Dairy and Beef/Sheep Units and assist with other PREEC activities.
Unit Overview
The feed mill delivers mixed rations to all three Palouse Research, Extension and Education Center’s livestock facilities located on the University of Idaho main campus. The mill staff works daily to calculate and mix rations that fit the needs of livestock ranging from lactating dairy cows to lambing ewes. This gives the diverse opportunity for students working for the facility to work with different species to meet their needs. Overall the facility mixes and delivers 2,500 tons of feed annually, and feeds on average 500 head of livestock.
The feed mill also works with researchers across the state to mix accurate and consistent rations to benefit their research trials whether it is to study metabolism or reproduction.
The facility has a total of 700 acres which are divided into livestock pastures, hay fields and silage fields. On average the facility grows 130 acres of high quality grass hay and 200 acres of alfalfa, barley and triticale for silage. All of these forages are used for research purposes, and mixed throughout several different rations. Students are given the opportunity to learn about forage brokering as all other commodities used in the rations are brought in from across the Pacific Northwest.

• Communicating regularly with Superintendent of the PREEC about issues related to the Feed Mill day-to-day operations.
• Attending PREEC staff meetings.
• Providing information, communicating and cooperating with other PREEC staff.
Key Accountability Provides fiscal support by:
Job Duties
• Attending monthly budget meetings with PREEC Superintendent and Financial Assistant.
• Providing accountability for purchases.
• Other duties as assigned by Livestock and Feed Mill General Manager or Dairy and Feed Mill Associate Manager.

Position Qualifications


Required Experience
• 3 years experience managing/feeding livestock.
• Experience maintaining feed mill equipment, and preparing diets.
• Experience with computer spreadsheets in order to establish and maintain a computerized inventory system.
Required Education
Required Licensures, Certifications or other
• Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to successfully pass a driver’s record check.
Additional Preferred
• Education: B.S. in Animal Science or closely related field.
• Experience in the operations of feed mixing with experimental rations, delivery equipment and purchasing of feed supplies.
• Ability to create 3-5 year crop management plan.
• Ability and desire to work with faculty, staff and students.
• An appreciation of research techniques and an understanding of the need for accuracy with ration mixing and experimental animal feeding.
• Must be neat and orderly and cooperative.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift, carry, and/or otherwise move up to 80 lbs.
Working Conditions
• Ability to work with toxic, volatile, and corrosive chemicals or carcinogenic substances; and/or work in adverse environmental conditions.
