Position Description

Our Purpose and Our Team

Harvard’s Information Security and Data Privacy (ISDP) team is a prominent office with university-wide purview and an important purpose: to safeguard the systems and data that propel Harvard’s noble mission and to bolster the university’s trustworthiness as a steward of personal information.  We’re passionate about privacy and security, and our work is meaningful, impactful, and deeply rewarding.

In ISDP, team health comes first.  We cultivate a culture of openness, positivity, growth, and trust.  We even have a Chief Fun Officer role to arrange our team activities!  Ours is a collegial environment where we support one another and where we encourage taking risks in the name of progress.

Want to be part of something new?  At Harvard, we’re taking the novel approach of fully integrating data privacy and information security into a single program that we’re calling “PrivSec.”  By combining the two, these complementary pursuits can act in concert and on equal footing, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.  Our PrivSec journey is just beginning, with strong potential for creating a new standard to be emulated elsewhere.

This Role

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) PrivSec Officer is a new role that we created to advance PrivSec within FAS.  This will begin with forming strong partnerships with faculty, staff, researchers, and leadership while gaining an in-depth understanding of FAS assets and risks.  As FAS PrivSec Officer, you will be a high-profile champion for data privacy and cybersecurity with the goal of facilitating awareness, system fortification, vulnerability management, privacy initiatives, and incident response -- all in close alignment with the university’s PrivSec program. You will also serve as a local resource for the FAS community, answering their questions and conducting PrivSec reviews for research projects.

FAS is the historic heart of Harvard, including Harvard College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Libraries, Harvard Athletics, among others.  The FAS PrivSec Officer will coordinate closely with the School Security Officers at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and Division of Continuing Education (DCE), which are also part of FAS.

As FAS PrivSec Officer, you will report directly to the University Chief Information Security and Data Privacy Officer (CISDPO).
