CDL Family/Community Services Coordinator (HRLY 5)

Brief Summary of this Position:

Reporting to the Curriculum/Program Director of the CDL, the Family/Community Services Coordinator is a full-time position with 20 hours per week working with families and 20 hours per week working at the front desk, respectively. The CDL is a learning laboratory for college students and primarily serves children and families of students, staff, and faculty of Berea College. This position will focus on connecting families with appropriate resources. In addition, this job is a bridge-builder across the center to support a sense of community, with a special focus on connecting families to classrooms. This person works to create connections to our local community that enhance curriculum and children's connections to community. Lastly this person provides training to CDL community members regarding children, parenting, family relations, and advocacy.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

Education required to ensure success in this position:

  • Bachelor's degree in Child and Family Studies, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, or a related field.

Experience required to ensure success in this position:

  • At least 3 years' experience working with children and families
  • Experience working with college student families preferred.

Special skills, knowledge and abilities:

  • Ability to work with adult learners
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to perform data collection, report writing, and program evaluation
  • Excellent organization, communication, and relationship building skills.
  • Willingness to learn about and implement Reggio-inspired practices

License, certification, or registration necessary:

  • CPR/First Aid Certified (Adult, Child & Infant)
  • Complete Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma Training (PAHT)
  • Complete Orientation I & II
  • T.B. Skin Test
  • Food Handlers Certificate
  • Valid driver's license
  • Required background checks (criminal and child abuse and neglect)

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to navigate campus/public buildings and grounds
  • Ability to travel independently by car and/or plane
  • Ability to occasionally lift up 20 pounds

Environmental conditions:

  • Professional office environment with interruptions and noise due to frequent visitors, students, staff and faculty
  • Occasional travel required for meetings, conferences, etc.

Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:

  • Standard office equipment: computer, fax, phone, etc.
  • Vehicle - college vans/cars

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Initiate collaborative partnerships with parents to establish mutual trust and respect
  • Plan appropriate experiences to enhance parent-child relationships
  • Assist in planning for student's success as college students and parents
  • Conduct home visits with families to build relationships and assess needs
  • Coordinate parent events and training on a regular basis
  • Coordinate parent committees
  • Conduct a CDL community needs assessment annually
  • Compile and maintain a list of community resources to distribute as needed
  • Provide comprehensive community resource information to families, individualizing to respond to the family's needs and concerns to the maximum extent possible
  • Refer families to community agencies/programs; assess accessibility, relevance and usefulness of assistance received
  • Work with families to complete required CDL paperwork, and child care subsidy when warranted
  • Assist teachers to determine if referral is necessary, assist the teachers/families through the process of referral, and assess success in meeting child and family needs
  • Quarterly report on status of families, including follow-up on services and outcomes
  • Communicate family needs with CDL administration and staff
  • Work with CDL Administrative Team and CDL teachers to facilitate family inclusion in classrooms
  • Coordinate family transitions into the program
  • Connect the CDL community to campus and community events, programs and departments
  • Work at the front desk, approximately 20 hours per week, to establish and maintain relationships with families and the community
  • Give tours of the CDL facility as necessary to potential families, donors, academic entities and other stakeholders
  • Complete other front desk duties including answering phones and completing work orders as needed

Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty and students.
