Two positions available, one in McLaughlin, SD and one in Eagle Butte, SD.
Are you interested in helping others and improving the health of people in your community? Do you have a passion for education and health? As a Family & Community Health Educator you will have a rewarding opportunity to assist families and youth with researched-based, hands-on nutrition education.
Job Responsibilities: Provide researched-based, hands-on nutrition education programming to individuals, families, and children with limited financial resources to strengthen the participant’s knowledge regarding healthy food choices, managing food resource dollars, and food safety.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of:
  • Nutrition programs
  • Nutrition needs, food safety and proper food preparation practices (preferred)
  • Common sense shopping techniques and household budgeting practices
  • Basic methodologies and teaching practices for youth, families, and adults (preferred)
  • Assigned area (community) and existing community services

Ability to:
  • Gather information and arrange data
  • Basic computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft applications
  • Communicate effectively (oral, written, and listening skills)
  • Lift up to 40 pounds, bend and stand for an extended period
  • Network and build/grow relationships with partners/agencies and participants
  • Promote and market programming to limited financial resource audiences and/or those that serve them

Skills:
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a budget and inventories
  • Demonstrated work or volunteer experience with limited resource families
  • Evidence of experience in keeping accurate and complete records
  • Demonstrated experience in organizing work and working independently (preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience in managing volunteers, adults, and students in a classroom setting (preferred)

Required License: Valid driver’s license
Comments: Routine travel to conduct classes at various sites is required, along with some overnight travel for training. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Position is classified as Program Assistant I. South Dakota State University is a tobacco free environment.
